October Limited Edition 2008 Newsletter!
Limited Edition Color - Amber Rose
Amber Rose (shown in shepherd sock)!
October brings all kinds of things - the changing of the seasons, candy corn in ridiculous quantities (you should see the stash on my desk!), little ghouls and goblins gearing up for trick-or-treating, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and most likely a daily rendition of "Happy Birthday" to our favorite New Zealander - Amber - here in the shop. This month's color is sort of a combination of the latter two, believe it or not. Amber Rose started as a joke, as Amber wanted to pick October's color (and have the color named after her, of course!) for her birthday. Then we got to thinking that, since her middle name is Rose, October might just be the perfect month for her to name the color. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is of course associated with pink, so after a little bit of color play, Amber Rose was created!
Speaking of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we hope you'll take a moment to remember the following health reminders from the Susan G. Komen Foundation:
1 in 7 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Early detection is key!
Beginning at age 20, women should perform a monthly self-exam, and have a medical professional perform one at least every three years.
Beginning at age 40, women should have mammograms and exams performed by a health professional annually.
Some of our favorite pink-worthy projects are below. We hope you'll find just the thing to knit for yourself or a loved one!
P.S. here's a guide to the past colors from the Lorna's Laces Exclusive Limited Edition Line.
Amber was so excited about this month's color, she finally cracked and let us teach her to knit - and
she's picked these legwarmers as her first project. They require two hanks of
Shepherd Worsted and, if you want,
two balls of a light mohair like Kidsilk Haze
...if you like a fuzzier leg warmer.
Oh yeah - speaking of Kidsilk Haze, did we tell you that we're getting a ton of Discontinued colors on Monday, October 6th? And that they'll be 50% off? Since we don't have them in stock yet, you can't order them (you can see which colors will be on sale)...but as soon as the truck arrives, we'll put the inventory into the system and then you can order away!
Brittany Needles 20% Off
We just got a great deal on our favorite Brittany Birch Needles and are extending that deal to all of you! Now 20% Off, you might want to take this opportunity to build up your double point needle stash, as well as your straight and crochet needle collections. Personally, these are some of my favorite needles... the finish is smooth and consistent ... and the Birch warms up right in your hands. Customers tell us that they love the shorter double points for socks - and the longer ones for sleeves - or legwarmers!
Tiny Bubbles Socks
With the holidays approaching just a bit faster than I'd like to admit, I'm getting requests from friends and family for...yes, you guessed it...socks! 2 Askew Designs' latest and greatest sock pattern is an amazingly beautiful (and simple!) sock pattern using two hanks of Shepherd Sock - it's shown in Cherry Tree Hill Supersock Select (dyed by the Indie Dyer). The pattern calls for 1 hank of the Boogeyman. Anyway, Ashley was lucky enough to test-knit these, and let me tell you, they're a fun knit that look much more complicated than they are!
5 New Scents of Knitters Hands
As many of your know, one of our favorite products in the store is the Knitters Hands Lotion Bar. Handmade by an in-store customer, the original Verbena scent is clean, fresh, and just perfect for us knitters. But last week Kathy (the creator) dropped off 5 new scents for us to try: Aloe, Apricot Freesia, Lilac, Rose, and Tahitian Vanilla (my favorite)... Now, we always loved the original scent, but these new ones just blew our socks off! Plus, Kathy is the one that recommended that we hire Amber back in January... Knitters Hands and Amber... a win-win combination! Thanks, Kathy :)
Lake of the Woods Capelet
I'm always a little reluctant to bid farewell to summer, but I think this capelet is just the thing to hold on to summer styles while embracing the changing seasons. You'll need 4-5 hanks of Lion and Lamb or Shepherd Worsted.
Sheep Tape Measure
These little 'sheepies' are a shop favorite, they're adorable and practical. Amber's from New Zealand and says these remind her of home, so she'll be using one of these little cuties to measure progress on her legwarmers!
Breast Cancer Support Scarf
Knit for a cure! Show your support for Breast Cancer Research with this 5-yarn scarf inspired by the one the Hollywood Hunks knit for us in September 2007. $5 from each kit purchased goes to the Susan G. Komen Foundation...and we're well on our way to raising $5,000 for the cause. Who says knitting can't save the world??
