It's December already?! Once again, time has slipped away too quickly this year. The last 6 months have simultaneously been the longest AND shortest 6 months of my life.
I can't believe that this little boy of mine is already sitting up, eating peas and carrots - and even cut his first tooth yesterday morning! Though it's gone by quickly,
I also feel like i'm 10 years older. Though he won't be able to fully appreciate the holidays this year as much as he will in years to come, that didn't stop us from
trying to develop a holiday-worthy color for this December. I have to say that I am quite pleased with the results... a little cranberry, a bit of pink blossom, and some of sagey
color that I have grown to love... the mixture of colors prompted Sandy to call out "Sugar Plum" right as we were opening the box!
The name stuck - it just seemed like the perfect moniker for this color - but it did prompt me to question myself... "do i even know what a Sugar Plum is?!" The answer was a resounding no.
So in case you're like me and can't quite put your finger on what exactly a true Sugar Plum looks like, i've taken the liberty of looking it up on wikipedia:
A sugar plum is a piece of dragée candy that is made of sugar and shaped in a small round or oval shape.
Sugar plums are widely associated with Christmas, through cultural phenomena such as the Sugar Plum Fairy in The Nutcracker (Composed by Tchaikovsky), as well as the line "Visions of sugar plums danced in their heads," from "A Visit from St. Nicholas," better known as "Twas the Night Before Christmas."
Sugar plums have also gained widespread recognition through the poem "The Sugar Plum Tree" by Eugene Field. The poem begins "Have you ever heard of the Sugar-Plum Tree? 'Tis a marvel of great renown!"
So now we know :). We hope you all have a wonderful and safe holiday season - and that you get lots and lots of knitting and crocheting done. That's certainly my plan!

Now that you're geared up on all kinds of great new sock, sport, and worsted weight yarn, you're going to need
some ideas for knitting with it! Below are a few new things that have hit the shelves - and that we think you might enjoy. :)
Ilga Leja Handknit Designs Patterns - Field and Forest $11.95
|
This multi-directional shawl makes the most of a handpainted yarn, especially when paired with a coordinating solid color (I'd suggest the Natural or the Cranberry in Lion and Lamb or Shepherd Worsted).
The Scarf measures 52" long by 10" wide - you'll need 437 yards of the MC and 435 of the CC. Shawl measures 80" long by 20" wide - you'll need 755 yards of the MC and 476 of the CC.
|
Ilga Leja Handknit Designs Patterns - Berry Hill $11.95
|
4-9 hanks of the the Swirl Chunky will make this cropped vest, worked from the top down, in a combination of textured and openwork stitches. The asymmetrical front closure makes this a unique piece...one that will knit up quickly!
|
Never Not Knitting Patterns - Cedar Leaf Shawlette $5.50
|
This is a tiny crescent shaped shawlette that drapes beautifully around your shoulders and looks absolutely stunning wrapped around your neck as a scarf. The curved stockinette st body is created through the use of short rows, and the beautiful leafy border is knit onto the body of the shawlette after its completed.
Use 3 hanks of the Swirl DK or 2 hanks of the Shepherd Sport.
|
Knitter's Magazine Great American Afghan Patterns - Great North American Afghan $12.95
|
Ah... one of these days... I'd love to knit up all of the squares in this book using the Lorna's Shepherd Worsted. Can you imagine a blanket knit out of all of the Limited Edition colors?! What a great idea -
each month, we could knit 1 square using the color of the month... and before you know it, the whole blanket would be done!
|
 Lynne Barr Reversible Knitting $29.95
|
Sandy and Jeanne are already knitting swatches from Lynne Barr's book Reversible Knitting! The two of them wouldn't even let me get the book into our system before they were running around talking about what yarn, what pattern, what to knit! I have to agree with them that this book will quickly become a staple in any knitter's library. The patterns use innovative short rows with easy to understand instruction and in the back of the book are practical patterns to knit up with your new Sugar Plum.
|
Interweave Press Interweave Knits Magazine Books - '09 Accessories $14.99
|
As usual, Interweave's extra Winter issue has tons of great projects - and they are just the right size for using 1-2-3 hanks of the Limited Edition color. So grab a hank of Shepherd Worsted Sugar Plum and get knitting on a hat or mittens ... or both!
|
Jennifer E. Seiffert Fearless Knitting Workbook $26.95
|
This new Fearless Knitting Workbook offers classically designed swatch exercises in specific technical areas, such as knit and purl patterns, cables, shaping, and lace. By introducing the basic stitch movements, vocabulary, charts, and knitting math for each exercise, you are more likely to be successful.

Tis the season for finding new and exciting gifts for family, friends, and even yourself! I've started crocheting a bit more lately (am making a hat for doug right now out of the Lana Grossa Meringo, though it might turn out
to be for me or huck, since it's my first beanie and i'm not sure if the size is right - haha)... and now am in the mood for an entire set of gorgeous crochet hooks. Currently, the few mismatched hooks that i have are shoved
into the corner of my knitting basket, so I was more than happy to order a few of the della Q crochet hook rolls for the shop - and one for myself! As anyone in the shop can tell you, I'm typically partial to the
brown della Q fabrics, but am particularly drawn to the red this time! So, I think i'll be putting that case and an entire set of
Pony Rosewood hooks on my Wish List.
How about you?!

Just a quick update on a few new (and old) yarns that have made their way onto our shelves in the last 30 days... Some are thin, some thick, some hand-dyed, and all are gorgeous!
We carried the Nature Cotton years ago, as well as the Malabrigo Lace Merino Both were shop favorites, so we've decided to bring them back!
And after seeing the ribbed cowl in the latest Vogue Knitting magazine, we simply had to order the new Super Chunky yarn from Misti Alpacas Talk about soft!
Once I get this crocheting thing figured out, I'm going to have to make a beanie for myself out of it... as usual, picking a color is the hard part.
I'm hoping for a greenish jacket for Christmas, so I think the Misti Alpaca Super Chunky Azulichen will match just perfectly.
P.S. We also just received these Needle Gauges From Addi... for $7, they measure addi needle sizes from 000 to 15. They are great stocking stuffers!

We still have some of the Swirl DK and Chunky left in stock, so make sure to grab some now if you missed out earlier!
Yes, you've read it correctly - the Lorna's Laces Lorna's Laces Swirl Chunky and Lorna's Laces Swirl DK are both 50% off! Normally $21 per hand-dyed hank, the Chunky is now $10.50. The DK is now $6.50 a hank, normally $13.
In case you aren't familiar with these yarns, they are both a wool and silk blend - the silk is actually one of the plies, creating a lighter strand carried the whole way through the hank.
