Limited Edition Color: New Years Lights

5, 4, 3, 2, 1..... Happy New Years (Lights)! We were all counting down until this month's color arrived in the shop. It's reminiscent of parade floats and fireworks and it just plain makes me smile. For only being officially into winter by a week or so we've had a lot of snow here in Truckee/Reno -- one of the perks of living in the mountains, I suppose. All this cold weather is, as Sandy always says, making me want to knit! Honestly, the bright colors in New Years Lights remind me of the funky, intensely colored toe socks (usually with tassels, bows, bells or who knows what attached) that were popular in my middle school years. I might just have to knit myself up a pair of toe socks (think knitting toes like knitting very small glove fingers) to reminisce over the awkward years, but if toe socks aren't your thing here are a few ideas for your New Years Lights:

Desert Garden Aran Cotton
Jo Sharp Desert Garden Aran Cotton
$3.84 a ball

Yep! We did it again... we got a great deal on a few Jo Sharp luxury yarns and are passing that savings on to you. On sale for 40% off, we have Desert Garden Aran Cotton for $3.84 a ball, Soho Summer DK Cotton for $3.84 a ball, Rare Comfort Kid Mohair for $4.68 a ball, and Rare Comfort Kid Infusion for $4.68. We don't have a ton, so make sure to order as much as you need right away... i can tell you right now that the girls and I all have our eyes on the Desert Garden... it's scrumptious!! Softer than any almost other cotton we've ever had.

Hover
Nelkin Designs: Hover

Last month we introduced you to Nelkin Designs patterns with Circulate, and this month I've fallen in love with the Hover Scarf. After taking stock of my personal scarf wardrobe, and finding that most of them are still double-stranded with eyelash yarn or ::gasp:: store-bought, I've decided it's time to treat myself to a little update. (Use 1 hank of the Shepherd Worsted or Lion & Lamb in New Years Lights for this pattern.)

Grape Trellis
Grape Trellis Socks

This time of year I love sport weight socks. They knit just a touch quicker than fingering weight socks and they're just that much warmer, too. I always have freezing feet -- I don't know why, so I wear my wool socks every chance I get! You'll want two hanks of New Years Lights in Shepherd Sport and one in a coordinating contrast color such as Pink Blossom or Cedar (for a more subtle touch!).

Children's Tunic
Children's Tunic

This has always been one of my favorite kids' patterns. Make it short-sleeved for the warmer months or long-sleeved to keep little ones warm all winter long. You'll need just 3-4 hanks of Shepherd Worsted in New Years Lights for this fun hoodie.

Not Just More Socks
Not Just More Socks

If you haven't been inspired by Sandi Rosner's Not Just More Socks yet, why not have a look at a few more yummy things you can do with sock weight yarn? You'll find everything from hats and mittens to camisoles and for you tried-and-true sock fanatics, yes, there are sock patterns too! The patterns are shown in Lana Grossa sock yarns, but we think they'd all be beautiful in Shepherd Sock. Plus, most patterns in the book will only require 2 hanks!

The Que
The Que - Lily Tweed

Generally, I'm all about functionality, and I think I'm ready to admit that my straight needle case just doesn't cut it when it comes to storing my circulars. They sort of flop all around, their cords springing open and tangling the second I unroll the case. The Que circular needle case by della Q is a brilliant solution with tabbed pockets for sizes 3 through 15 and a small zippered pouch for other notions. It's pure organizational genious!
