How to Join a New Ball of Yarn into Your Project

How to Join a New Ball of Yarn into Your Project

If you're new to knitting or branching out to multi-ball projects, you may be wondering what the best way to join new ball of yarn into your project. Check out this helpful instructional video featuring Jeanne, our resident knitting guru, as she demonstrates this essential knitting skill!

1. As you are approaching the end of your old ball of yarn, you can knit a couple of stitches with the old yarn.

2. Then take the old yarn and new yarn, (old yarn to the right and new yarn to the left in the video) and knit with them together as if they are one strand of yarn.

3. Knit a couple of stitches (3-4 stitches is just right!) with the two yarns held together.

4. Now drop the old yarn and then knit with the new ball of yarn and finish your row as normal.

5. When you start your next row make sure to knit those double-stranded stitches as one stitch so you don't end up with extra stitches.

6. You can come back later and weave in the last little strands of the end of the old yarn and the beginning of the new yarn. They should disappear right into the wrong side of the fabric once they have been washed!

The "Egg-stra" Special Sock Kits

Ovarian cancer is one of the scariest cancers out there as it is difficult to diagnose in the early stages when it can be more easily treated, and therefore the survival rate has not increased over the last 50 years. You may know someone, a friend or loved one, who suffered from or is a survivor of ovarian cancer. Skacel has initiated a project to boost awareness and research that will help to increase that survival rate. We are proud to introduce the Egg-stra Special Sock Kit!

Skacel Ovarian Cancer Support Kits - The Egg-stra Special Sock
Support Ovarian Cancer
The "Egg-stra" Special Sock
$25.00

From cuff to toe these socks are a reminder that ovarian cancer can be beaten if we unite against it. The pattern, designed by Rosemary Chappy Chapman, features an ovary pattern and is knit in a special Trekking XXL color Teal (the official color designated to ovarian cancer) dyed especially for this egg-ceptional kit. Both Jimmy Beans and Skacel are donating 100% of the proceeds from this kit to the Marsha Rivkin Center for Ovarian Cancer to help fund research for ovarian cancer. Join us in helping to heighten awareness of this disease through the craft that we love!

Here's a sampling of our handiwork this month... !!

Victoria's Multnomah Shawl
Victoria's Multnomah Shawl
This is a lovely free pattern found on Ravelry. I used a skein of Jitterbug that I had in my stash and some of it had already been used, so I didn't quite have a full skein. My shawl ended up being a little small due to the missing yardage and due to the fact that I used a size 3 needle! A big lesson for me in lace shawl knitting - use bigger needles for better drape! I still love it!
Victoria's Man of Storr
Victoria's Man of Storr
An easy-peasy pattern that is free on Ravelry, called Man of Storr. I had one skein of Unisono from Skacel in Red/Orange and then I completed the 'lace' with Shepherd Sport in Ysolda Red. I couldn't have asked for a better match! Thanks Terry, for the suggestion!
Pretty Puffs Slouch Hat
Pretty Puffs Slouch Hat
Shevawn recently went out of town and finished this adorable hat on the drive and isn't she cute in it? She used a free pattern and grabbed her favorite color in Lamb's Pride worsted Persian Peacock and was off with her hook and voila instant hat! She said the pattern was really easy to follow!
Personal Footprints in DK weight
Personal Footprints in DK weight
Some of you might know that Jeanne knits socks all the time and when she saw our August limited edition yarn in the Greenline DK she went wilder than normal hard to believe I know, but true. Needles in hand she is working toe up super warm winter sleeping socks out of Cat Bordhi's Personal Footprints book and is loving the socks, the yarn and can't wait to wear them! Of course she is using the magic loop, show off, ha ha!
Jeanne's Traveling Woman Shawl
Jeanne's Traveling Woman Shawl
When we got the Plymouth Mushishi in Jeanne decided that she would do her own version of The Traveling Woman Shawl. She is using a larger yarn, so a larger needles and is almost done with this project. She is already planning her next one out of another color in this lovely yarn and says she is in yarn heaven with this one.
