       Knitting with Gnocchi
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

Lana Grossa Gnocchi has arrived! We've been anxiously awaiting our shipment for months and now that it's here, we couldn't be more excited. Have you looked at the yarn, but are not exactly sure how to knit with it? Jeanne gives a lesson in this fun video :)

Requires:

- crochet hook

- straight needles (US 11 recommended)

- For more information, take a look at Jeanne's Gnocchi scarf shown in the video.

1. Make a slip knot in the yarn, between the bobbles.

2. Place the crochet hook through this slip knot.

3. With the knitting needle in your left hand and the crochet hook in your right hand, make sure that the working yarn is UNDER the needle. You can hold it taut with one of your fingers while holding the knitting needles (yes, we need extra fingers at times like these!).

4. Take your crochet hook and hook the working yarn (which is under the needle) between the bobbles if possible, so it forces the yarn to come over the needle, pull it through the slip knot on your hook. You have made one stitch.

5. Then make sure to take the working yarn back around so it sits under the needle.

6. Repeat steps 3 through 5 for as many stitches (minus one) as you need. The last stitch on the needle will be when you remove the loop from the crochet hook and place it on the LH needle. So if you need 8 stitches, cast on 7 with your crochet hook and then use the loop left on the crochet hook for stitch number 8.

Kit of the Month :: Save 20%

Aran Sleeveless Shell

Crystal Palace Aran Print Sleeveless Shell
Crystal Palace Aran Print Sleeveless Shell
Was $33.00 to $46.20
Now from $11.55 to $16.17
(65% off!)

Do the math! This kit of the month is a steal... whether or not you make the sleeveless top (free pattern!) or just squirrel away some of this yarn for $2.31 a ball... (that's what that kit discount works out to). There are 13 beautiful colors of variegated 100% wool (that's feltable) to choose from - personally, i like the 2119 - but i have a feeling that the 2106 is going to sell out first. And at $2.31 for 102 yards (if you buy 5-7 balls), you certainly can't go wrong. This yarn (and this kit) is why "stashes" exist!

Beaded Stitch Markers

Stitch Markers
Love, Faith and Hope :: $24 per set

This month's handmade stitch markers (made by our own Victoria) are of the Love variety... These stitch markers are made with message beads that have the words Love, Faith and Hope stamped on them.

They are lovely on their own, but when paired up with natural stone beads that are a combination of Rhodochrosite and Pyrite, the message is even stronger. Rhodochrosite is a pale pink colored stone that represents love, compassion and a positive attitude. When these Rhodochrosite stones were mined, they were found with Pyrite which is a stone of protection, and grounding and is said to bring good fortune. If you already have Love, Faith and Hope in your life, then I'd say you are pretty fortunate! Enjoy the message beads as they slide along while you knit (the words are stamped on both sides of the bead)!

Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

Did you know that we now carry ALL COLORS of Cascade 220? Yep! We are now THE online source for any of your Cascade 220 needs... and we've also recently picked up their 128 Superwash (a fabulous, chunky superwash yarn - super soft and great for baby items) and Ultra Pima (a machine washable silky soft cotton yarn. did i mention that it's silky? you simply won't believe that this is a cotton yarn.).

Well now that you know where to get all your Cascade 220, you're going to need some ideas on what to knit with it! Enter one of the most popular new books of the season: 60 Quick Knits (shown above). In this stunning volume of all-new projects, many of today's top knitwear designers come together to create an irresistible collection of hats, scarves, and mittens-all in Cascade 220. There's something for everyone, from an adorable monkey-face hat and a dazzling mosaic pattern scarf to a classic muffler and Fair Isle flower mittens. Knitters will find plenty of inspiration and beauty here! (and we've highlighted a few of the projects from the book below - the prices below are what the yarn would cost to make the project.)

New Yarns: Araucania and Malabrigo Rasta
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

When the Aracaunia Nature Cotton and Chaiten yarns first arrived at the store, I could not keep my eyes of the tantalizing colors! Aracaunia yarns come to us all the way from Chili and these hand dyed yarns are not only scrumptious to look at, but heavenly to touch! The Nature Cotton comes in bright, solid colors and is a thick and thin textured bulky yarn. Extremely soft to the touch (I pet it almost every time I walk by it in the store), the Nature Cotton is perfect for everything from baby blankets to pullovers to... well just about anything :) The Chaiten, on the other hand, is a 100% raw silk fiber that comes in several soft, variegated hues, my favorite being Blue/Violet. Of DK weight, this light, machine washable fiber knits into beautiful, featherweight fabric. If you are at a loss as to what to do with the classy Chaiten, look no further than Araucania: Summer Fruits, a pattern book by designer Jane Ellison. None of could keep our eyes out of this book the day it arrived; every page is a possible next project. Sara has already bought the book and is planning to start the Pepino cardigan --a flattering, lightweight sweater-- as soon as she figures out which of the fabulous colors she wants to use! Make sure to check out all three of our kits for the Chaiten sweaters from Summer Fruits!

We just began carrying the single-ply bulky yarn from Malabrigo called Rasta, and I am head-over-heels in love! Like all the other Malabrigo yarns, Rasta is unbelievably soft and comes in an array of spectacular kettle-dyed color combinations and hues. This yarn is so think and lusciously fleecy you really don't need to knit/crochet with it at all, simply dig your fingers into a hank and poof! Insta-mittens! Or untwist the hank and poof! Insta-blanket! Rasta totals 90 yards per skein and knits up in no time on size US 13-17 needles. If you are looking for a one-of-a-kind yarn for that next big project or a quick knitting fiber for that last minute gift, Rasta is the perfect pick!

P.S. We're in the process of taking and putting up new photos for ALL of the Malabrigo Yarn that we carry... stay tuned - the pics are looking good!

Sale Yarn Update: Araucania, Debbie Bliss, LOTS OF SOCK and more!
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

This month, we have a fun assortment of sale stuff... the Nature Wool Chunky is a hand-dyed Chilean wool that's nice and chunky... just the way I like it! The nearly solids are quite the contrast from the Katia Futura - a bulky wool blend dyed to create it's own design when worked with. How fun! Personally, I'm partial to the hand-dyed Andes and am hoping to use colors 25 and 28 for crocheted beanies! Oh yeah! I should also mention that in addition to the yarns below, we just received another shipment of GGH and Trendsetter sale yarns... save up to 65% on some of your favorite summer yarns! Plus, another batch of Lantern Moon Dalbergia Needles recently arrived and they are still 40% off. Get them while you can!

Here's a sampling of our handiwork this month... !!

Sara's Cap Sleeve Cardigan Vest
Sara's Cap Sleeve Cardigan Vest
How about this great tunic vest as an addition to your wardrobe? That's what Sara K said when she saw this pattern and just had to cast on. She chose the Spud and Chloe Sweater yarn for her project, which is not quite what the pattern calls for. She has adjusted the sizing she is working up the 42 and needle sizes slightly to accommodate the lighter weight yarn, so be sure to do a gauge swatch and keeping checking your gauge throughout the project. Listed are the needles Sara has gone down one size overall that are called for in the pattern, so again be sure to check your gauge. This shows you that you aren't always locked into a certain yarn weight and way to be a brave knitter Sara!
Iris the Gourmet Monster
Iris the Gourmet Monster
Sara fell in love with Iris and picked the kit up in the new color Zombie BBQ for her little pet. She decided to go down a needle size the pattern calls for a US 10, but she used a US 9 to make Iris a bit denser and all she has left to do is stuff the little monster and sew her/him together. The kit is complete with the eyes, mouth, and pattern too! She is also knitting one for Amber in the Lorna's Laces Shepherd Worsted, color Catalpa. Amber is such a lucky bean!! This kit is fantastic as you can knit it up in worsted, bulky or funky yarns too!
Terry's Garden Shawl
Terry's Garden Shawl
Terry fell in love with the Noro Aya as soon as it was unpacked and so she picked up 3 balls of this great yarn and cast on the Garden Shawl from Evelyn Clark's book Knitting Lace Triangles. Since this is a worsted weight yarn she was able to us bigger needles and only 3 balls of the yarn. The silk in this yarn has given this shawl a fantastic drape, while the wool makes it very snug and warm. Don't you think that striping is great?
V-Neck Shaped Cardigan
V-Neck Shaped Cardigan
Terry is teaching a top down sweater class and decided that she would knit up Knitting Pure and Simple's Neck Down V-Neck Shaped Cardigan with her students. She had stashed some of the Lorna's Lace Swirl DK yarn in Camouflage color and has committed 7 hanks to this project. **Please note that the needles listed are what is asked for in the pattern, but Terry has adjusted her needle size after knitting her gauge swatch.
Sandy's Summer Wrap
Sandy's Summer Wrap
Sandy fell in love with the Misti Alpaca Pima Silk yarn and decided to whip up a simple summer wrap with it. Of course you can't go wrong with Mac and Me patterns, so she grabbed a copy of the Summer Wrap for this beautiful yarn. You can see how lovely it's going to be and she only needs 4 hanks of this yarn to complete the wrap!
Terry's Amelie Socks
Terry's Amelie Socks
When we got the Amelie sock pattern by Never Not Knitting in the shop Terry just had to jump in and cast on. She had been asking about the magic loop technique and decided to really learn it with this pattern. So far so good on this one and the pattern is lovely! I can't wait to see the finished product and hear how she likes the magic loop.
Hydrangea Socks
Hydrangea Socks
Sandy inspired Jeanne to cast on the Hydrangea socks from Janel Laidman's book The Eclectic Sole and she chose the Fleur colorway in Hand Maiden Merino 2/6! Wow is this a neat pattern and the yarn just makes it come together, with the beautiful hand painted hues of pinks, tans, and steel gray it is perfect for spring socks! Sandy is a new sock knitter and so when she jumped on board Jeanne just had to get in on the fun and hence a sock race has begun. Stay tuned to see who wins this one!
