Slushy Facial - 2012 Lorna's Laces Limited Edition Color

Available in Shepherd Sock, Shepherd Worsted, Shepherd Sport, Helen's Lace, Lion & Lamb, Honor, Solemate, and now Sportmate!

The hit TV show, Glee, is back this September, and many of the gals here at the shop can't wait to plunk down for an hour to knit and enjoy some entertaining musical drama! As an ode to this guilty pleasure, the Lorna's Limited Edition Color for September has been coined "Slushy Facial". For those familiar with the show, you'll get the reference, but for those of you who haven't succumbed to the sweet melodies and dramatic plotline of a high school glee club experiencing the highs and lows of high school, a slushy facial is pretty much what it sounds like: a slushy to the face. Of course we do not condone actual slushy facials, but the imagery of this name was almost too perfect for this bright, rainbow-esque colorway. Designed by Rachel, one of our purchasers and Glee enthusiasts, this color has a lot going on and is ideal for simple knits that really show off the unique spectrum of orange, banana, blue raspberry, grape, and lime.

Hexi-whats? Other uses for Koigu Skeinettes and Hexipuffs!
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

Pirate Huck

Koigu's Mini Skeinette Grab Bags have taken the shop by storm! In fact, we've run completely out in record time. Fear not, more skeinettes are on the way and should be here by the middle of September! Word on the street is that the mini-skein shortage is being caused by Tiny Owl Knits' exceptionally popular Beekeeper's Quilt. We're in hexipuff heaven...or some might say hell, depending on who you ask! With all of these hexipuffs lying around, we're now asking ourselves, "what does one do with 200 random puffs before sewing them into a quilt?" Well, we started to brainstorm and listed below are some of the ideas we came up with! We'd love to hear more - be sure to email us yours!

  • Fashion a pillow cover to match your Beekeeper Quilt.
  • Make strands and place them in an open doorway or window to create retro curtains.
  • Not the beaded curtain type? Use the strands as a decorative garland to grace doorways, windows, mantles or Christmas trees.
  • Create a fanciful mobile to hang above a baby crib or as a "modern art piece" in your office.
  • Put a couple dozen (or everything you've got) in a glass vase or empty fishbowl to use as a colorful centerpiece or decoration.
  • Make stringed light covers. Tie un-stuffed hexipuffs over the bulbs on stringed lights for a gorgeous hand painted glow.
  • Tree ornaments. Use duplicate stitch to put initials or a simple picture on each hexipuff!
  • Stitch numbers and/or letters on hexipuffs and use them as teaching tools for young children.
  • Stick a pipe cleaner through the center of a hexipuff to fashion a stem. Voila! Hexipuff flower!
  • Use some scrap yarn and one hexipuff to make a pirate eye patch, genius idea provided by Huck!

Scrumptious + Ysolda Teague = The Perfect Yarn!
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

The name says it all: Scrumptious! These silk and merino blends from Fyberspates are not only deliciously soft to the touch, but eye-catching, as well since they're available in a palette of rich, luxurious colors.
I first met Jeni, the artist and owner of Fyberspates, earlier this year at TNNA in Columbus, Ohio. Before the convention floor opened, I spent some time at the Lantern Moon booth helping Jeni and Jan, one of our sales reps, make Scrumptious color cards. Despite being jet-lagged and the early morning hour, I had a blast tying bits of yarn to cardboard - Jeni was an absolute riot! Needless to say, after an hour or so of working with Jeni and her finger-pleasing yarns, I knew we just had to get some. At TNNA
I am now delighted to introduce three fabulous Scrumptious yarns: Lace, Sport 4ply and DK/Worsted!
All three of these yarns are composed of a 45% Silk and 55% Merino blend that creates a supple fabric with elegant drape. The subtle halo and glowing sheen of the fiber just enhances the deep, saturated colorways - love! The delicate Lace comes with an generous yardage of 1,093 (!!!) - the perfect amount for feather-weight shawls like Sonning, a modern lacy piece found in The Scrumptious Collection, Volume 1. We're also drooling over the simply stunning Barley Sugar Cowl from Ysolda Teague's Saturday Treat booklet.

The Sport 4ply also has yardage that is hard to ignore, a whopping 399 yards! The only machine-washable fiber of the three yarns (be sure to use gentle cycle and air-dry), one to two skeins is all you need for the adorable Corlyna Baby Cardigan from The Scrumptious Baby Collection. Last but not least, the sumptuous DK/Worsted is a classic single ply, perfect for the Hendred Hat - which takes just one skein and US 5 and 6 needles - or a cardi for fall such as Wytham. As you can see, there is plenty of amazing pattern support for the Scrumptious yarns, including some exquisite designs by Ysolda Teague! You can bet we've put some of our favorite kits together so be sure to check them out!
Wool Watcher Want to get a taste of Scrumptious at a great price? Be sure to keep an eye on Wool Watcher Monday, September 10th -I promise, your fingers will thank you!

Did you know that Skacel has been around for 25 years? That's right! Even though they've been around for a while, Skacel still brings us new and exciting products each season. The latest arrivals include the Addi Express and Addi Express King, crazy-cool knitting machines that knit both flat and in the round. Also brand new are the Addi Quick, a useful felting tool and the Addi Click Starter Set, a sampler set of the original Turbo, Lace, and Natura tips so you can test which needles work best for you (also includes 24" and 32" cords). Pima Silk Hand Paint
Pima Silk Hand Paint
$19.60
Misti Alpaca's Pima Silk Hand Paints are back! After taking a hiatus for over a year, we've got more of this wonderful yarn back in stock, in both new and old colorways. This delectably soft cotton and silk blend is a light DK weight, closer to a sport or even fingering weight. The exceptional hand painted colorways are one-of-a-kind and a treat to work with. Use one 327 skein for a pair of colorful bed slippers, a simple shawl or this free scarf pattern from Misti!
Tosh Merino has arrived! The worsted-weight relative of Tosh Merino DK and Tosh Merino Light has been on our "Must Have" list for quite some time so, of course, we're super excited to have yet another squishy-soft yarn from Madelinetosh on our shelves. Tosh Merino is a rustic-looking single ply yarn that holds dye particularly well - resulting in deep, vibrant shades of your favorite Tosh colorways. If you don't see the Madelinetosh color you're looking for - in Tosh Merino or any other base - just shoot us an email or give us a call and we'll get some on order and add it to the website!
Knit Out Box
Knit Out Box
$31.00
Avoid infuriating tangles, tenacious dust bunnies or pet hair, and games of "Where's My Yarn?" with the handy-dandy Knit Out Boxes from Lantern Moon! These practical and appealing 5" cubes are the perfect place to store yarn for your current WIP. These silken boxes are ingeniously designed to keep your yarn pristine while you knit or crochet. Simply place your ball or skein inside, thread the yarn through the snag-free hole in the side of the box and you're ready to cast on! How's that for thinking outside the box?!
Our resident novelty yarn enthusiast, Leanne, just loves Trendsetter's Baja and Acacia yarns! Baja may look a little wacky, with its periodic bursts of fringe, loosely woven construction and hint of sparkle, but, as Leanne tells me, the end result is a unique, quirky fabric you'll adore. This yarn works great as a textural element combined with other yarns, as you can see in the Woven Ruffle Scarf! Acacia, on the other hand, is what you might classify as a more "normal" yarn. The cotton, viscose, silk, hemp and linen blend has a light, crisp texture in the hank which softens as you knit, wash and wear. For those who prefer plant fibers to wool and alpaca or live in a warmer climate, this DK weight yarn is perfect for lighter cardigans, tanks and shells. Check out the Acaia Pattern Booklet for some trendy inspiration!

September Kit of the Month: Berroco Olin Wrap
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

After an air conditioner malfunction that dropped the temperature in my office into the 60s for several days, I now find myself reaching for extra layers before leaving for the shop in the mornings. While hoodies and cardigans always get the job done, I can't help but be frustrated that it is still in the 90s outside and I'm stuck wearing sweaters all day! Many of the gals here at the shop recommend shawls and wraps as an alternative to layers with sleeves, which have proven to be an exceptional way to ward of the chill of A/C without making me forget it is still summer. In light of this discovery, and the impending fall season (turns out wraps are great for all occasions), we've chosen the Olin Wrap as this month's Kit of the Month! Olin uses Berroco Flicker, an airy chainette-construction yarn that has just a suggestion of sparkle. The wrap itself is fun to knit on US 10 needles with alternating bands of garter stitch, bobbles and lace.

Now for the entire month of August, you can purchase the yarn and the pattern booklet for 20% off! Happy knitting!

Romi Hill - Home Is Where The Heart Is - Shawl 1: Carson
Romi Hill - Home Is Where The Heart Is - Shawl 1: Carson
$7.50
The first shawl pattern in designer Rosemary "Romi" Hill's newest shawl collection, Home Is Where The Heart Is, will be available next week! Inspired by Nevada's capitol, Carson City, located just south of us in Reno, this stunning shawl is knit using 2 colors of Dream in Color Smooshy sock yarn. If you are unfamiliar with Romi and her gorgeous shawls, now is the perfect time to get acquainted! Romi recently moved here to northern Nevada, just a couple towns away from Reno. She approached us several months ago about doing a collaboration for her next shawl series (this is the third year Romi has produced a themed collection of shawls), and we immediately said "YES"!
As you may have guessed, this series is inspired by the towns, mountains, valleys, and high deserts of northern Nevada. You can purchase the e-book including digital copies of all the shawl patterns directly from Romi on Ravelry. Or, if you prefer a hard copy, the patterns will be available individually in paper form exclusively from us here at Jimmy Beans Wool! We've also taken the liberty of creating kits as well, making it that much easier to knit your very own Carson Shawl. Home is Where the Heart IsCarson Shawl Kit
From $48.00 to $55.50
Just when you thought it couldn't get any better than shawls inspired by the untamed Nevadan wilderness, I tell you this: as each shawl pattern becomes available on our website, the first 50 people to purchase their kit will receive a FREE set of Zooni Stitch Markers from Knitter's Pride, makers for the Dreamz, Cubics, and Nova needles. We've already run out of stitch markers for Shawl #1, but Shawl #2 will be available for pre-order soon and the first 50 customers can expect an extra treat with their yarn! Curious about what yarn that might be? I'll give you a hint: it starts with a "T" and ends in "ough Love". ;)

Bean's Pick of the Month: Rachel!

Shepherd Sock - Slushy Facial
Shepherd Sock - Slushy Facial
This month's cheeky color, Slushy Facial, was created by Rachel, one of the gals on our Purchasing Team (she helps buy all the yarn!). Both Rachel's birthday and wedding anniversary take place during the month of September, making her limited edition colorway debut all the more special... not to mention she is a huge fan of Glee and looking forward to seeing what "new directions" the show takes this season!
Of course, I had to ask Rachel if there were any birthday gifts she is looking forward to. "I'm hoping for a skein of luxury yarn I wouldn't normally splurge on", she told me, "and a new iPad. It has become my pattern library, chart reader, and primary web surfer, but at 2 and a half years old (a dinosaur in the world of technology), it just isn't functioning as well as it used to". If you couldn't tell from that comment, Rachel is one of our most "plugged in" knitters here and always finding new things for us to become obsessed with. Her latest discovery? Cecily Glowik MacDonald's new book, Landing. Beautifully photographed and full of amazing sweater designs, this collection is here just in time for cardigan season! Rachel

Other things Rachel is looking forward to this month are the transition from summer to fall, a camping trip with her husband to celebrate their anniversary, knitting something with Slushy Facial (most likely a pair of socks), and, most importantly, the arrival of Madelinetosh's Pashmina Worsted!
