Shark Week's back, doo doo doo doo doo doo! Shark Week's back!
|
And just in time for Jimmy Beans Univer-sea-ty's lesson on zoology! Originally, Shark Week was created as a way to correct a bad reputation and bring awareness to the conservation efforts concerning our finned friends. This program premiered on July 17th, 1988, and the rest is fishtory! Nowadays, this event is broadcast in over 72 countries and promoted via social networks so more people can tune in to learn (and laugh) than ever before!
|
|
With that being said, we're so excited to follow along with this year's highly-anticipated Shark Week event! This year's jaw-some experience has been on our radar since, well, last year's Shark Week! To show our love for these fearsome and well-loved creatures, we're celebrating with a beautiful, ankle-biting knit - socks! Designed by our own Laura Cunitz, the fin-tastic fiber used in this kit is Matte Sock by Valkyrie Fibers. Each kit comes complete with 1 skein (463 yards) of the color Shallow Water, 115 yards of the shade Open Ocean, stitch markers, a tapestry needle, and the Ravelry code needed to get your pattern!
|
We seriously can't wait to sink our teeth, er, needles into this aptly named kit, A Shiver of Sharks, and knit it up!
DID YOU KNOW?: Great White Sharks ambush their prey by hanging out below them before leaping out of the water to secure their meal. This is called breaching, and they can jump up as high as TEN FEET out of the water!

Jimmy Beans Wool Shark Week Sock Kits 2019

Magpies have a reputation for taking trinkets only to stash them away in their nest just because they like the look of 'em! We can't quite say we blame them, as we do the same. "It's just one more skein!" we say, but oh do those funky fibers add up until suddenly, our stash is out of control! Then we come up with, "Well, it's an organized mess." to justify the need for another skein. But hey, if birds can be unapologetic about their need for pretty things, so can we!
In places like China and Korea, magpies are seen as a symbol of good luck! And boy were we lucky to find these beautiful kits using Magpie Fibers gorgeous Swanky DK and Swanky Sock yarn! Both bases have a touch of cashmere for a luxurious feel while still being machine washable (we do recommend hand-washing it, though). Each skein is a work of art featuring rich colors in a unique palette dyed by hand.
DID YOU KNOW?: Magpies are a very intelligent species! This bird can recognize itself in a mirror, which, currently, only a few apes, bottlenose dolphins, and Asian elephants are capable of.

A-Moose-ing Toft Kits!
Nothing is quite as special as making a gift by hand. Handmade gifts are a wonderful way to show your love with something personal (whether this is for yourself or someone else). One of the more popular crafts to do this with is Amigurumi! Amigurumi (a mixture of two Japanese terms: ami meaning crochet or knit while nuigurumi means a stuffed doll) is an ideal way to not only hone your skills as a crafter but to make an adorable item that can easily fit into anyone's life (after all, everyone has a favorite animal, right?)!
We've picked up two new, crochet creatures for our hooks! The adorable Toft Amigurumi kits are perfect for anyone interested in beginning to crochet; Chablis the Unicorn is a great beginner's project while Logan the Moose is more challenging. Each kit comes with Toft's luxurious pure wool DK yarn, polyester toy stuffing, a crochet hook, a wool needle, and an easy-to-follow downloadable pattern complete with video links for all the techniques!
DID YOU KNOW?: Moose are surprisingly good swimmers and can even dive underwater when searching for food. Their wide, flat hooves make for excellent flippers and can take them as far as 12 MILES while swimming.

Answering the Shawl of the Wild
Butterflies can see in red, yellow, and green, as well as colors in the ultraviolet range that we can't see. All we hope is that they would appreciate how gorgeous this Papillon Shawl is! After all, it IS inspired by them.
Using two skeins of Urth Yarns Uneek Fingering and one skein of Malabrigo Sock (or Cascade Heritage) yarn, this wondrous wrap surprisingly knits up like a breeze.

A group of hedgehogs (although rare, as they are solitary creatures) is called an array. Interestingly enough, this word also describes Andrea Mowry's Find Your Fade shawl wonderfully (this coincidence is just too perfect)!
Featuring an array of colors using Hedgehog Fibres Skinny Singles, this piece truly lets your creativity shine through an endless amount of color combinations!

The average honey bee beats its wings about 200 times per second to create their iconic buzz. We've taken a page from their book and have been buzzing about the gorgeous Hotel of Bees shawl.
Using Scheepjes River Washed and Scheepjes Stone Washed yarn, this wrap was fun to crochet up and resulted in a bee-utiful statement piece!
|
|
DID YOU KNOW?: When a worker bee finds a new resource (usually water or flowers), she will return home to the hive and perform what is called a waggle dance. The direction the bee moves is in direct relation to the resource and is surprisingly accurate!

Fauna Finery!
Llamas are intelligent animals, being able to learn things quickly and easily (seriously, baby llamas can run with the herd the day they're born!). Humans have used them for this skill for a while to make our lives easier and keep our livestock safe. Natural Life has shown their llove for this animal with the Llive Happy Collection to make our lives just that much richer! From air fresheners to recycled gift bags, each item features an adorably fluffy llama or alpaca!
Cats are very calculated in what they do; even their love of boxes is instinctual! Their whiskers are there to help measure an opening to make sure their body can fit through it. Buttons, Etc & Paradise Exotic Accessories cleverly made a crochet tape measure (in the shape of a kitty and other creatures) to help us gauge our projects so WE can ensure our needle size is correct!
DID YOU KNOW?: Left-paw dominant cats are usually male while female cats tend to be right-paw dominant! There's also a study that shows left-paw dominant cats usually show a stronger fear response.

Last week (July 11th to be exact) our beans Brandi and Marie made their way over to the Nevada Humane Society to be the experts on site for their Bunny Sit & Knit! Every month, we get to sit, craft, and relax in a room with free-roaming bunnies (it's seriously so hard to not bring them all home with us)! A bunny expert is also on site to teach us all about these fluffy little animals. This monthly event starts at 5:00 P.M. and lasts for an hour. Are you a local? Come join us for some fuzzy and fibery fun with some of these wascawwy wabbits next month on August 1st!
|
DID YOU KNOW?: When rabbits are super happy, they do this adorable thing where they jump and twist in mid-air. This move is called a binky (seriously, even the name of this action is cute!).

Show and Tell!
Ailene's Baby Elephant Softie
Seriously, how ADORABLE is this project!? A little birdy told our bean Ailene that it was someone's birthday, and that birdy was right! The daughter of another bean turned three this week, and to celebrate, Ailene knit up these adorable little fellas for her! Using old stash yarn (Lorna's Laces Masham in Hampstead to be exact), two enchanting elephants were born! We don't carry Lorna's Laces Masham anymore, but Lorna's Laces Shepherd Worsted is a great substitute!
