Hedgehog in the House!
Hedgehogs have quite a few needles (about 5,000-7,000!) on their bodies, and they're even able to raise and lower them to respond to whatever situation they're in. So, this begs the question: exactly how fast can they knit?! They MUST be knitting machines, right?? They also rely on their sense of smell to help them get around and find some tasty treats! That being said, we may have happened on some yummy yarn ourselves, hehe! Freshly foraged by our friends at Hedgehog Fibres, we've gotten some new super-soft Kidsilk Lace yarn! Each skein is made of a silk core wrapped in kid mohair, giving it a beautiful halo for a gorgeous lace yarn! This base is offered in the stylish color palette of its sister yarns (Merino DK, Skinny Singles, and Sock) comprising of hazy neutrals and bright neons, all expertly hand-dyed with love. This fantastically fuzzy fiber is also a key ingredient to the stylish and stripey Somber Shawl!
|
In our search for new things in the garden (where the little hedgies roam), we found new shades in Hedgehog Fibres Sock, Skinny Singles, and even the Potluck Fades! We're in LOVE, and a few Beans have even been eyeing them for our own personal stashes. Perfect for breezy shawls, slouchy hats, or some funky socks, there's a little something from Hedgehog for everyone!

Hot New Hues From Lorna's and Tosh!
|
History is a favorite subject for many of the Beans here; it allows us to look back in time under a lens to see how things operated, how they changed, and how things were resolved. Lorna's Laces caught wind of this and made a color specifically for us history buffs! Independence Park is a beautifully variegated red, white, and blue skein inspired by the historic location of the same name in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania! This park has been given the nickname of America's most historic square mile, as it's home to the Liberty Bell, the First Bank of the United States, and the First Continental Congress!
|
Alaska is the largest state in the United States, so it only makes sense that it would be home to some of the nation's largest national parks, right? Alaska is home to Glacier Bay, which is the sixth largest national park and home to some of the most beautiful scenery like the snowy white glaciers and towering mountains to name a few points of interest! Paying homage to this beautiful location, Lorna's Laces Glacier Bay is rich in dazzling blue and green hues that just make us want our needles and hooks to take a cool dip in!

Congaree National Park is located in central South Carolina and is known for its towering pine trees and giant hardwoods that stretch into the sky and seem to touch the clouds! This floodplain forest includes one of the highest canopies in the world, and Lorna's Laces managed to capture its rustic beauty in their newest limited edition colorway! Congaree National Park is warm-toned russet hue with splatters of dark brown peppered in. This shade makes us want to strap on our hiking boots and take a trip to the forest to relax and breathe in nature while breathing out our next stitch!
|
Each Lorna's Laces limited edition color is available in Shepherd Sock and will only be around for a short amount of time! Be sure to grab yours before they leave for good!

When Jimmy last went to Vietnam, she learned all about the traditional technique of cloth dyeing called batik! This process uses wax to design patterns on the cloth and then the whole thing is submerged in dye; the fabric then goes into a bath of boiling water to remove the wax and leave the beautiful hand-drawn designs behind! Learning About Batiks is the limited edition color by Madelinetosh inspired by this interesting and unique dyeing process! With a rainbow of delicious colors like coral, gold, and slate blue featured in this hank, it's safe to say that we're OBSESSED.

It's no secret around JBW that Jimmy LOVES nature. If she isn't knitting or picking out new projects, you can definitely find her hiking and truly experiencing the beauty of nature for herself! Madelinetosh created the color Hydrothermal Wonders based off of her trip to Yellowstone National Park and features the vivid colors found in the Grand Prismatic Spring (which just so happens to be the largest hot spring in the United States!!). The elegant mixture of neutrals with the pops of blue is just as eye-catching as the many geysers that freckle the park!
|
Jimmy made a trip to the Netherlands to visit Stephen West and Scheepjes to talk all about yarn, new projects, and TULIPS! The Netherlands (specifically Holland) is home to the Keukenhof (which translates to "Kitchen Garden", also known as the Garden of Europe!), which is one of the largest flower gardens in the world! Drawing inspiration from this famed tulip field, Madelinetosh created the limited edition colorway, Totally Tulips to commemorate this occasion! This color mirrors the lively shades of the flowers, just blossoming with orange and splashed with magenta and green! We definitely wouldn't mind taking a stroll through a whole field of this color!

DEAR JIMMY: It's way too noisy to crochet no matter where I go. With my husband watching the game (at full volume no less), my two kids screaming and running around, and the dog barking at birds outside, I just can't get away even to just make myself a darn scarf for crying out loud! How do I tell them my frustrations without hurting their feelings so I can crochet in peace? - Frazzled in Fresno
DEAR FRAZZLED: Giving them a dose of their own medicine would be the obvious answer, of course! I'm talkin' ALL. OUT. Put on a movie and yell at it when the main character makes a silly decision or bang on some pots and pans when your kids are doing their homework. When asked why you're doing this, you explain that you just gotta. You're trying out to be the drummer for your favorite band, and you need all the practice you can get!
Okay... An eye for an eye probably isn't the best way to approach the situation. I'm a big supporter in doing the things that bring you personal joy (that includes whoopin' and hollerin' at the game), but not if it prevents somebody else from doing what THEY want (it's a weird balance)! My favorite way to find the peace necessary for my project is to sit outside (whether in your backyard or a local park) and just take the time for myself and only myself. I'd pack enough yarn for the afternoon in my trusty Namaste Maker's Hybrid Belt Bag and then head on out for some well-deserved me time.
If going outside isn't possible (I wouldn't necessarily want to crochet in sweltering heat or freezing cold), I would tell my family at dinner that I would like some quiet time for my projects. You all share a space, so it isn't really too much to ask for, really! Sometimes, plugging into your favorite music and drowning them out is a perfectly reasonable way to isolate yourself from their noise.

Beginning on December 1st, the countdown to Christmas begins (unless, of course, you're an overachiever and start the countdown on December 26th, hehe!), and what better way to countdown than with a project to work on every day!? This year, we're going to be craftin' up Amy Gunderson's "Spirits of the Season" Wrap, which uses some of our favorite hand-dyers like Madelinetosh, Hedgehog Fibres, Fyberspates, and Spun Right Round! Knit versions are now available for pre-order in our two fabulous colorways, Mulled Wine (Amy's pick), teal and purple with pops of pink, and Hot Toddy (Jimmy's pick), jewel tones and shades of gray.

Each Craftvent Calendar comes with over 900 yards of yarny goodness with notions sprinkled in between! Everything you need for this project comes in 24 magnetic metal tins that neatly sit on a metal hanging board - which makes excellent craft room decor once you finish your project (it's like two gifts in one!)!
Is crocheting more your style? Worry not! The Crochet Craftvent Calendar launches on October 4th!

Project On Our Needles!
Laura's Somber Shawl
Laura's Somber Shawl is anything BUT somber with its vibrant, peachy stripes breaking up the more subdued hues in the speckles. Using our new Hedgehog Fibres Somber Shawl Kit in Dusk, Laura was inspired to knit up this beautiful wrap after meeting up with her friend (and owner of Hedgehog Fibers), Beata, in Ireland! Laura fell in love with the shape of the shawl and how the lace increases complement the stripes perfectly!
