Limited Edition Color: Boughs of Holly

Boughs of Holly

(shown in Shepherd Sock, Shepherd Sport, Shepherd Worsted, and Lion and Lamb)

Fa la la la la... la la la la... Those are the only words i can remember, except that i think "boughs of holly" might be in the song somewhere. Yep - it's that time again: Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Boxing Day ... all of the wonderful and colorful December holidays are coming soon! No matter what you celebrate (or what you don't!), we can all benefit from a little extra light and color during these weeks of very little sunshine. I don't know about you, but darkness at 4:30 just puts me into a funk. It's like WHAM! and all of the sudden i'm literally in tears over a cup of spilt milk. But that's where knitting comes in... and i have to say that this month's color (Boughs of Holly) is making me happier than most. The color simply reminds me of holiday wreaths and stockings and the prepackaged sugar cookies at Safeway! So what am i going to knit with my Boughs of Holly? Hmmm... how about a simple lap blanket for the holidays? I can keep it with my other holiday decorations - and bring it out every year to remind me of how lucky i am to have a job in which i'm surrounded by yarn!!! And here are a few ideas for your Boughs of Holly:

Nelkin Designs: Circulate

You might recognize Laura Nelkin's name from Schaefer Yarns... for years, she's been the design director and has given us such memorable patterns as the Undulating Scarf. Still working for Schaefer, she's now designing patterns under her own label. Circulate is the first of such patterns, but we'll be receiving more (and models to use for video reviews) later next week. We'll keep you posted! (Use 2 hanks of the Shepherd Sport in Boughs of Holly for this pattern.)

Fair Isle Stocking

Looking for a Christmas Stocking pattern that's out of the ordinary? Leave it to 2 Askew Designs (the name says it all) to come up with one! Though the Shepherd Worsted Boughs of Holly might get a bit lost in the fair isle, it might also be fun to use against a white or natural background.... i guess you'll never know until you try!

Ocean Breezes

Love the Lion and Lamb Boughs of Holly, but not sure what you want to knit with it? How about one of the ocean-inspired scarves from Sheryl Thies' new book Ocean Breezes? There are 25 scarves in this book - and i'm sure you'll be able to find at least one that tickles your fancy. In fact, how about this as a gift idea: a copy of the book along with 1-2 hanks of the Shepherd Worsted or the Lion and Lamb? I'm sure that gift would make any knitter happy!!

Simply Squared
Simply Squared

Wanna know what's popular this week? It's this simply squared vest pattern by Knitting at Knoon... It seems like every other customer is ordering one! It's knit in a worsted weight, so the Shepherd Worsted or Lion and Lamb would work... and i love the way the 2 buttons hold everything together. This looks easy enough that you could probably get it knitted, blocked and wrapped by the end of the month :)

Notepad Holder
Lantern Moon Notepad Holder

This time of year I'm all about getting my holiday shopping done early - so I can relax, bake, whatever. These are great because they're a perfect stocking stuffer gift for all of the fiber lovers on your list. Who doesn't use sticky notes? Besides being great for writing notes on, of course, they're great for keeping track of where in a pattern you are. Just stick them right under the last line completed!

Rio Bag

Ok, now that you've got all of this great knitting gear - new yarn, new patterns, fun accessories - you've gotta have a beautiful way to carry it around. Enter the new(ish) Rio bag from Jordana Paige. We'll be doing a video review of this bag on Thursday, so you can really see how large it is - and you can see the colors 'in person.' In the meantime, this is one item you're going to want to put on your wishlist... and probably in every color (the red is my favorite today, but the olive was my pick yesterday!).

Thanks for reading and Happy Knitting!
