Love Potion - February's Limited Edition Color

(available in Shepherd Sock, Shepherd Sport, Shepherd Worsted, Helen's Lace, Lion and Lamb, and Swirl Chunky.)

The following introduction was written by our very own Leanne:

This February's limited edition color, Love Potion, from Lorna's Laces, pays tribute to the month of secret admires and heart-shaped everything. Ranging from innocently pale pink to a passionate purple these optimistic tones bring bright warm-fuzzies to an oftentimes-dreary end-of-winter month. As I'm sure you're well aware, love potions are traditionally an easy -though often temporary way-- to guarantee that special someone will fall madly in love with you. When Laura first informed me that this month's yarn was named Love Potion, my first thought was to whom I would ensnare with my lovingly knit Love Potion scarf. My current crush is an extremely good-looking French exchange student in my chemistry class, and if I sit close enough it would be all to easy for me to slip it around his neck as he tries not to fall asleep in lecture and Bingo! I will definitely be spending my summer vacation in Paris with the new love of my life! Needless to say, I've already reserved two skeins for this endeavor!

      New Lornas Colors
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

The newest colors from Lorna's Laces (not limited edition - these colors are here to stay!) are in stock and ready to ship. We haven't quite received every new color (Zombie Bbq, Catalpa, Pullman, Avondale, Humboldt, and Calumet) in every yarn (sport, sock, worsted, helens, lion and lamb), but we do have them all on order and hope to be receiving them soon. In the meantime, we thought we'd give you a peek at the ones we do have in stock... and wanted to introduce a few of our favorites to you (and while the zombie bbq seems to be the party favorite, i'm sticking with the Calumet - it's like Pioneer, only with dark purple. it's amazing!):

The Zombie BBQ has certainly been quite a hit with everyone here at the store. I don't know about you, but I have a number of zombie-enthusiast friends with whom I have participated in many zombie-related activities such as alphabetizing zombie movie collections, attending zombie-themed parties, and held serious conversations involving survival techniques if ever there should be a zombie invasion. If you also have a fascination with zombies, or know someone who does, look no further for the perfect medium from which to knit or crochet a most unique zombie hat, sweater or pair of socks (or anything else for that matter)! If the novelty of the name isn't enough (or perhaps the image it conjures is too much), the unorthodox run of light, muted green, red, blue and black creates a remarkable and distinctive look.

When Leanne saw that one of the new colors from Lorna's Laces was called Catalpa, she told me that she was hit with a wave of sweet nostalgia. Here's what she told me: While I was growing up I used to live off of a street called Catalpa, named after the catalpa trees that are present in almost every front yard. Catalpas have luscious white blooms that flower in the spring, and while I don't favor their scent, when a wind storm blows through the blossoms are torn from their branches and flung about the air in a snow-like flurry. These perfumed blizzards were always a sign that spring was here and summer vacation was just around the corner. Catalpa (the color) pays tribute to those springtime flower-storms in a simple combination of pastel yellow, sky blue and a hint of faded green. This color is perfect for summery garments and those projects that require a understated, cheery tone.

      Patterns for your Love Potion
Jimmy Beans Wool Newsletters

Now that you're geared up on all kinds of great new sock, sport, and worsted weight yarn, you're going to need some ideas for knitting with it! Below are a few new things that have hit the shelves - and that we think you might enjoy. :)

Knitting at Knoon Patterns - Jammies with PJ Puppy
Jammies with PJ Puppy

Who can say no to this?! I have to say, I am always amazed at the creativity behind Knitting at Knoon Patterns. From Snobuddy to Prehistoric Pals, from Safari Friends to Take me to your Leader and now this adorable pattern! I just might have to knit this up for the sheer fun of it! Small items that won't take up much yarn or much time. Knit up in Spring colors, this would be a beautiful gift set. And puppies as well....too cute. (and wouldn't little Love Potion puppies just steal the show??!)

2 Askew Designs 2 Askew Patterns - Acorn Head Topper
2 Askew Designs - Acorn Head Topper

Just 1-2 hanks of the Love Potion Sport would be perfect for these clever and quick acorn hats. Designed by our retail manager, Jeanne, this little hat will warm the heads and heart of anyone who wears it.

KnitWhits Patterns - Stage Left Leg Warmers
KnitWhits Leg Warmers

Ok, I'm not exactly sure i can pull off wearing legwarmers anymore (i'm too old and my snow filled life just doesn't lend itself well to ballet flats. of course, leg warmers over uggs might be If I were a bit more fashion-conscious right now (i'm lucky to get in a daily shower!), I'd make a pair of these using 1 hank of Love Potion Shepherd Worsted striped with Bold Red or Chocolate. Talk about quick and fun to knit:)

Knitting Pure and Simple :: Baby & Children Patterns - 103 - Baby Sleeping Bag
KPS - Baby Sleeping Bag

Yes, that is my baby in the photo... little Huckleberry had his very first modeling gig just a few months ago. Don't you think he did a good job?! He even smiled for the camera. And what baby wouldn't smile when wearing an ingenius creation from Knitting Pure and Simple? Combine 2-3 hanks of the Shepherd Worsted, this pattern, and a few hours of knitting to create the perfect baby gift. Try Love Potion for girls and Edgewater for boys.

Ilga Leja Handknit Designs Patterns - Field and Forest
Ilga Leja Field and Forest

Some new Igla Leja patterns have arrived recently and this is one of the most popular. This multi-directional shawl makes the most of a handpainted yarn, especially when paired with a coordinating solid color. Scarf measures 52 long by 10 wide. I'd suggest trying the Love Potion Lion and Lamb, perhaps with Mineshaft, Natural, or Whisper?

Vogue Knitting Book Books - Shawls & Wraps
Vogue Shawls & Wraps

I think you could probably find a project in this beautiful book for every single yarn that we carry... (and I wouldn't be surprised if Sandy took that as a challenge!). The Lion and Lamb always drapes well for shawls, as does the Helen's Lace.

Norah Gaughan Pattern Books - Vol. 6 - Hyperbole/Metaphor
Norah Gaughan Vol. 6 - Hyperbole/Metaphor

Norah Gaughan's latest volume in her spectacular series for Berroco just came in! The girls can't stop opening it to comment on one of the many patterns inside. As with all of Norah's designs, these are very unique and use basic techniques to create a certain flair that we all want in our projects every now and again. This volume is filled with asymmetrical ruffles that add just the right feminine finish to the projects and evoke a sense of sophistication.

Rowan Knitting Magazines Books - Rowan Knitting Magazine #47
Rowan Knitting Magazine #47

Though you might not want to use the Love Potion for any of the projects in this latest issue, I wanted to let you know that we've gotten the new Rowan books and yarns... we'll be showing them off in the next newsletter (as well as the new Be Sweet, Hand Maiden, Blue Sky Alpacas, and Spud and Chloe).

What Sandy wants, Sandy gets. Well, at least as yarn is concerned! Sandy has been drooling over the newer Louisa Harding yarns and books for i don't know how long. It's certainly been months. So we finally broke down and ordered them, just for her (ok, ok, i kinda like them too... especially the willow tweed)! And once Sandy found out that we'd ordered the yarn (and the Little Cake book), she started to drool even more... In fact, she was drooling so much that Amber had to beg the Louisa Harding folks to give us a copy of the Little Cake book at the TNNA show last month (because we knew that our shipment wasn't going to arrive for another week)... When we returned from the show, Amber surprised Sandy with the book - and as soon as the yarn arrived the next week, Sandy started knitting the cute beret on the cover of the book. :)

The new Berroco Yarns have arrived and are ready for consumption! We'll be adding kits to the website over the next week or two - and you'll surely be seeing a lot of these yarns (especially the origami) on our Project Log. As usual, the books from Berroco are fantastic - and you can't beat the price points on these yarns.
