| Pretty In Pink, Neighborhood Fiber Co & SmartStix! Looking For Something Jaw-Some? | | |
|
Shark Week's back doo doo doo doo doo doo! As we start to settle into our loveseats, recliners, and beds for a jaw-some week filled with teeth, chum (ew, sorry for that visual), and the deep, we're so excited to celebrate with not one, but TWO fin-tastic shark-themed kits to keep you on the edge of your seat and your needles and hooks, well, hooked! It's time to take a swim on the wild tide with our offerings for one of our favorite weeks of the year!
No-fin can compare to these absolutely adorable shark amigurumis! Seriously, just look at them - their charming little eyes and tiny teeth just add another level of app-eel to these crocheted cuties (Are you tired of the fish puns yet? Because we totally have more, hehe)! The Hammerhead Sharks kit includes Berroco Modern Cotton in the colors 1624 - Salty Brine, 1662 - Rose Island, and 1600 - Bluffs as well as two sets of 8mm safety eyes, enough Polyfil to fill both of your sharks, a darning needle, a CZ shark tooth progress keeper, and a download code for the Hammerhead Shark amigurumi pattern designed by Michael Hon. We recommend using a little bit of stashed thread to create the mouth, give it eyebrows, or even some cute little blush lines!

We're up to our gills with adoration for our knit kit, The Feeding Frenzy Beanie & Mitts! This stranded colorwork pair features waves and shark fin motifs that swim in different directions, truly getting us in the mood to take a dip and cozy up with a great white this week! This kit contains two skeins of Madelinetosh DK in Great Gray Owl and Arctic, a faux fur mink pom pom, a darning needle, and a download code for the Feeding Frenzy Beanie & Mitts pattern designed by Mandi Coffeen of Rosieposiedesignco. We also may have overheard that her birthday is today and we want to wish her the happiest of celebrations - we hope your day goes by swimmingly! Though, we gotta say we're a little gill-ty of being jealous that her birthday falls so close to one of the coolest weeks of the year!

Last year, we went around JBW HQ to ask The Beans what their all-time fave shark was and why - the answers certainly didn't disappoint. Take a bite out of our blog post to sea their answers!

Living in the western United States, we're no strangers to drought, but this? This is absolutely unacceptable! We demand our plaid-clad faves and elegant performances to continue because we're frothing at the mouths for more drama to lose ourselves in (especially after such a stressful year). Waiting for the next season of our favorite fantasy/romance/drama to come out is always an option, but we're parched, we need something to tide us over until 2022!

Luckily, Rachel Roden of Unraveled Designs heard us and shares in this plight, coming up with a gorgeous shawl pattern inspired by the one and only Brianna - you know, the one with fiery hair and beautiful fashion! Rachel, who has been a long-time fan of the series and is no stranger to the infamous times of drought, cleverly named this pattern "Droughtlander".
To keep us happy and busy until the kick-off of the next season, she's created a KAL (Knit Along) we can participate in! This one will be a little less structured than previous MKALs, beginning on July 23rd, 2021. Everyone is invited to knit-along, read-along, or re-watch-along, following the journey of Jamie, Claire, and the gang!
|
To catch up with our fictional faves, we're going to knit a shawl just in time for fall! To prepare for Droughtlander, pick up a kit, which includes two skeins of Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light, a download code for the Droughtlander pattern, and a wooden shawl stick that complements the design. Knitted from the middle out, this shawl uses a combination of slipped stitch colorwork for the center section, and traditional stranded colorwork for the hound's tooth wings on either side.
Please note: We recommend using a US size 5 (3.75mm) 32" needle to complete this project - it is not included in the kit itself.

It's All Good!
What's that phrase again? It's all good in the neighborhood? Because if so, we're inclined to agree! We've yet to see a yarn base or colorway that hasn't blown us away from our friends over at Neighborhood Fiber Co.! Last week, us Beans had the excitement (and some fear) of scattered thunderstorms breaking the heatwave, though they only started rolling in at night, which stole from us the delight in seeing the rainbow at the end of the storm.
But then we realized - we had that rainbow in our project bags the whole time! Karida, the mastermind behind the scrumptious shades and squishy strings of Neighborhood Fiber Co. truly hit it out of the park with her eye for detail and knowing exactly what we want (which is always more yarn, hehe)!
Last year, we had the pleasure of featuring Neighborhood Fiber Co. as a pop-up, and you guys loved them so much that we decided to take them on as a year-round yarn! Can we get a booyah!? Did you know that Organic Studio Worsted is GOTS-certified organic? Not only are the colors vibrant and delicious, but the fibers are good for the environment on top of being machine-washable - talk about a win, win, WIN!
This show-stopper is perfect for any season of crafting. Make an ultra-cool cowl, a super-soft sweater, or a squishy shawl - the world is your oyster!

Perfect in Pink!
During our time in quarantine, we binged a lot of movies - no, seriously, we mean a LOT of movies. From late-night terrors of serial killers and other criminals to tear-filled dramas where the lovers must part ways, we've all expanded our horizons (and probably bought more subscription services providing such entertainment than we're comfortable admitting to the world).
|
But one thing has always rung true for us, and that's that you can't beat the classics! With all of the remakes and reimaginings happening in the current day, we just keep finding our ways back to ol' reliable. Ol' reliable, in this case, being sweet coming-of-age stories and comedies that make our stomachs hurt from laughing. That's why we're so excited to have the newest collection from Madelinetosh, featuring shades inspired by movies with plots consisting of forgetting special birthdays, complicated love triangles, and the creation of the "perfect woman".

To celebrate this little capsule of new hughes ( ;) ), our Bean, Amy, has created a crescent-shaped shawl, named the 80s Baby Shawl that uses all of these new colors to create a dreamy design you'll be wrapping up in time and time again. Whether you're... home alone or, perhaps taking a day off, this shawl will keep you on your toes, using stitch patterns suitable for adventurous beginners and beyond!
Want to make matching accessories? We've got you. We also have open stock of all of these cleverly named shades such as Fifteen Candles, Pleasing in Pink, Strange Science, and more! (Psst, an easy way to find these colors in one place is to sort by the "Latest First" from the drop-down menu!)

Setting The Re-CORD Straight!
Have you ever been using a notion designed specifically for your craft and thought, "Dang, that's smart!"? We've had that reaction a few times, to say the least. Sometimes our accessories are so smart, we forget what life was like before we started using them! Things like locking stitch markers, row counter rings, and, well, not to toot our own horns here, but toot toot, we can't get enough of our line of Jimmy's SmartStix and Jimmy's Smart Cords!
We've told you before that Jimmy's SmartStix have one-inch markings on the needle so you don't have to grab a ruler or tape measure, but did you know that the cords connecting our Interchangeable Tips and Circular Needles have those very same markings on them? To make things even sweeter, Jimmy's Smart Cords are also compatible with any Knitter's Pride interchangeable needle! Each cord is resilient and flexible, able to lay flat with no kink or twist. The joins are smooth and enable stitches to slide across effortlessly, without snags! The long-threaded screw-in join also makes sure those needles stay put (speaking from experience, nothing is worse than getting in the groove of things and suddenly your entire needle just pops off! As you can imagine, many profanities were said that day). To ensure extra secure tightening, you will also find a tightening hole with a tightening key to make sure that bad boy stays put! Each length of cord is color-coded to make identifying them that much easier!

We're about to say something scary now, don't be frightened. Okay, are you ready? One... Two... Three-- We're more than halfway through the year. Which can only mean one thing - we're quickly approaching some pretty exciting things like holidays celebrating all things spooky, snow-capped mountains in time for the gift-giving season, and, duh, how could we forget that we're getting closer and closer to the beginning of the Sierra Nevada Yarn Crawl!?
This year, we're celebrating ahead of time with a pre-crawl Make-Along! With options available for knitters and crocheters alike, we're gonna take pride in our finished shawls come the crawl. We suppose you could think of these projects as our own little Rhinebeck Sweater of sorts.
Both knit and crochet patterns will be using fingering/sock-weight yarn in either 1 or 2 colors, with each shop (including ours) using different yarn to show off just how unique you can make a design feel to you!

Knitters - we recommend purchasing the pattern from Justine Chenel's Ravelry page and picking up an Emerald Bay Shawl kit, which uses Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light. This cozy, yet lightweight shawl was inspired by the colors and textures of, well, Emerald Bay, which happens to be the jewel of our local Lake Tahoe. This beautiful inlet where water meets land shimmers with sparkling shades of blue and turquoise dotted with grays and greens that soothe you upon arrival! This same feeling is translated perfectly into the garter stitch and ripple/wave motifs seen throughout!

|
Crocheters - we recommend picking up the pattern from Michon Chandler's Ravelry page and purchasing a Meandering Up Mountains kit which also uses Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light. We're totally in love with the skyline and mountain range our town is surrounded by (seriously, you should see it at dusk - desert sunsets with shaded mountains are literal perfection). With rolling foothills and sharp inclines, the picturesque scenery is imitated perfectly with diamond-shaped motifs in alternating colors, which remind us of the towering pine trees and even taller mountain range.

Project On Our Needles!
Amy's Windowlit Cardigan
Reminiscent of the soft light filtering in through the windows on a lazy summer day, the Windowlit cardigan, designed by our Bean, Amy Gunderson, is a truly spectacular work of art. Easy-to-wear and designed to be taken on the go as your trusty sidekick for when the temperatures dip a little bit lower than comfortable, you can layer this piece with just about anything! Using Madelinetosh Wool + Cotton, you can be sure that the colorway options are plentiful and beautiful to boot!, as well as being lightweight and breathable!
Casting on at the back hem, you then travel up and over the shoulders where the front panels are then knit separately down to the front hems. The optional sleeve tabs are great for a bit of interest, tying the whole thing together into a neat little package!
This cardigan is available as a kit on our site with a free pattern via Knitty.
