| Grant A Wish, Shop Small, & Win! Shop Small and Make a BIG Impact! | | |
Make-A-Wish® has always been an organization we admired and respected. Inspired by an act of good back in 1980, Make-A-Wish® has been strengthening the lives of eligible children with critical illnesses across the United States and its territories. On average, one wish is granted every 34 minutes! Being committed to helping these children can improve their mood and mental well-being, which also plays a role in helping them get better physically.

We're honored to announce that this year, Jimmy Beans Wool is sponsoring Junior, a seven-year-old boy with a wish to go to LEGOLAND. During his second week of kindergarten, Junior began showing symptoms of what would later be diagnosed as acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL for short).
Since then, he has been receiving regular chemotherapy treatments. Despite the treatments and medication making it a little difficult for him to feel like himself, Junior has never lost his passion for video games, soccer, and just being a kid, hanging out with his dog, Champ. His competitive spirit is fueled by potato chips, chicken nuggets, and the occasional buffet.
|
Junior's wish to go to LEGOLAND is rooted not only in his passion for playing and building but also in his love for his family! He wants to experience a new adventure with them and be able to get himself more LEGOs so he can share with his brother (Junior may have confessed that he doesn't ALWAYS share). He's especially looking forward to the fun rides and the giant waterpark! November marks Junior's last month of chemotherapy, and we're dedicated to helping him celebrate by making his wish come true!
To help us achieve this goal, we will be hosting a raffle - the winner will be chosen on December 31st, 2019. Each raffle ticket is $5.00 and enters you in for a chance at winning one of 10 loaded project bags. Each bag is valued between $200.00-$300.00 and will ship anywhere in the world for free. These raffle tickets are only available through Jimmy Beans Wool and can be purchased multiple times for multiple entries - please note that these are not physical tickets and your receipt counts as your entry (or entries). These raffle tickets are also tax deductible - if you have any questions regarding that, please don't hesitate to call us at (775) 827-9276 during our business hours of 10:00AM - 5:00PM PST.

The fiber arts world is like a giant garden. Each and every shop, designer, spinner, maker, and dyer is unique in their processes and materials, which only makes this garden more colorful and vibrant as time goes on! We planted ourselves in this garden together, growing, blossoming, and lifting one another as more opportunities arose (see what we did there?) and presented themselves to us all.
Speaking of growing, did you know about Jimmy's Beans for Brains Scholarship Program?!
|
|
For those of you who want to be in the know that aren't already, Beans for Brains is a merit-based scholarship program for artistic students pursuing or already in the process of attending post-secondary education. This program focuses on several things, including yarn knowledge (oh yeah, this is for the knitters, crocheters, and weavers out there!), GPA, extracurricular activities, financial need, and more while uplifting their creativity through the fiber arts! In the past, the Beans for Brains Scholarship was given to four or five students each year to help them move forward and accomplish their dreams! From local universities like our own University of Nevada, Reno, to Colleges like Harvard and Yale, Beans for Brains is a program for any and all fiber arts lovers out there!
|
With that being said, drumroll, please...
We're excited to inform you that the Beans for Brains Scholarship Program is going to be relaunching in 2020! There will be not four, not five, but SIX $2,500.00 scholarships given based on four regions as well as a local, Reno award and an international award. While we can't spill ALL of the beans just yet, we're just buzzing around here thinking about it!! Stay tuned for our official announcement soon!!
During our Summer Retreat earlier this year, we asked a bunch of our guests (were you one of them!?) to knit or crochet hats for Eddy House - an organization that aims to end youth homelessness in Reno, Nevada. With our stitch-savvy retreaters' help, we gathered a little over 50 hats (and a pair of really long, wacky striped socks) to keep our homeless youth a little less chilly in the coming months. Eddy House provides shelter, food, life skills, and educational opportunities, so those without housing don't fall behind. Thank you so much to all of our retreaters that participated in giving a hand-made item to our local charity!

Brands with a Purpose!
Some brands we carry have built themselves on giving back and helping out their communities. Whether through donations or employment, we admire their foundations and continue to support them through stocking them in our online and retail shops. Each brand is one-of-a-kind and gives back in such different ways - it really puts into perspective what we can all accomplish!

Kelbourne Woolens proudly supports the Fight for Fifteen by making sure none of their employees earn less than $15 per hour - this includes student interns! They happily welcome people of all backgrounds to fully support a diverse and inclusive range of both customers and employees! Kelbourne Woolens gives back to their community by ways of volunteering, educating, and donating yarn.

Knitter's Pride makes it their mission to donate a portion of every purchase to manage and operate a school for underprivileged children who do not have access to formal education. They provide schooling to more than 900 students - most of whom are living in extreme poverty. Knitter's Pride also has a policy to never refuse a job to women who are looking for one, as for most, this is their first place of employment.
|
Malabrigo employs mostly women and tries their best to give job opportunities to people who may have fewer opportunities than others. They have also been working to build themselves into a greener business. Their yarn is free from a range of harmful substances often found in manufacturing. Malabrigo's superwash process uses a thin, diluted resin coating that is used in the making of facial tissues and paper towels.
|
Universal Yarn uses their materials and time to donate to their local Charlotte refugee center. They help refugee women to produce items to supplement their income while learning about new projects and techniques in the process.

Urth Yarns plants a tree for every skein purchased - you, read that right - Every. Single. Skein! By planting trees, they help cause a ripple effect, meaning families in affected areas can better afford their healthcare costs, focus on investing in their children's education, and lessen the likelihood of people ending up in urban slums in search of earning more money. In short, this effect helps end extreme poverty!

Designers to Support!
For many designers out there, making a pattern or two is just their side job - something they can manage outside of a normal 9-5. Turning something you love into something profitable is everybody's dream, no matter how niche your hobby may seem. This past year, we've seen tremendous growth through some of our favorite designers in what they're creating and donating their time and energy to. We want to lift them up and shine the spotlight on their amazing work. You may have heard of some of these people, but hopefully, we can introduce you to a new designer or two, hehe!
Joji Locatelli is a master of drapey, intricate knitted designs. She explores how to use simple shapes to make something beautiful (she even designed last year's knit Craftvent shawl!) and has fun doing it. Joji's signature elegance is truly timeless and will always look good on your needles!
Julie Dubreux, AKA Julie Knits in Paris, is making waves with her eye for color and fun! Supporting indie dyers from around the world, Julie creates gorgeous patterns to truly show the beauty of the yarn. She's been featured in magazines like Pom Pom Quarterly and Laine! Plus, blue hair? We're jealous!
Knitting and designing her own patterns since the mid-'70s, Marin Melchior (MarinJa Knits) has been exploring how shapes and textures complement each other! Designer of the super-popular Papillon Shawl, she's not afraid to push the boundaries of her color stories!
Tian Connaughton brings us the best of both worlds by being an AMAZING designer and tech editor with a whole library filled with knit and crochet patterns! Her designs are easily accessible for the adventurous knitter, daring crocheter and beyond without sacrificing the beauty in simpler designs!
Do you love lace? Cables, perhaps? Maybe you're searching for some colorwork? Look no further, because Connie Peng (you may know her as yellowcosmo!) has you covered! Self-taught has never felt so good! Her extensive library of lacy shawls and soft sweaters has left us drooling and we can't wait for more!

Just because October (National Breast Cancer Awareness Month) is over doesn't mean we stop supporting the many women that battle this disease every day. This year, we've partnered with BreastCancer.org and KnittedKnockers.org to bring more awareness to breast cancer through projects, exclusive colorways, and donations via pink products! Until we run out of these products, we will continue to donate a portion of the proceeds to help each charity in reaching their goals and spreading the word.
This year, we introduced the knit Whirling Dervish cowl designed by Afifa Sayeed of Afifa Knits and its crocheted sister project, the Breakers Cowl designed by Deanne Ramsey of Addydae Designs. Each kit comes with one skein of Neighbourhood Fibre Co. Studio DK in the color Strength, This kit comes in a pink Oh Snap Bag and includes a Maker's Dot Journal, Soak Mini-Soak packet, leather tag, and exclusive stitch markers from A Needle Runs Through It. Each one of these kits donates $5.00 to BreastCancer.org.

Indie Dyers with a Dream!
We admire the tenacity of indie dyers. The process of starting your own business is scary - to take that leap of faith takes a whole lotta guts (and maybe some huge sinks for rinsing yarn). Below we have a few independent dyers we featured throughout this year that inspire us to push some boundaries and never forget our roots!

Lady Dye Yarns
Lady Dye Yarns is an eco-friendly hand-dyer created by Diane Ivy. Drawing inspiration from graffiti and street art, she has made sure that each batch of yarn is dyed in small quantities to ensure the very best quality possible. Her dye-lightful eye for color results in striking, ultra-unique shades that will feel right at home on your needles and hooks!

KT and the Squid
Both an indie dyer AND designer (a two-for-one deal on being INKREDIBLE), Katy, from KT and the Squid has her hands full - but we wouldn't mind helping her out by taking some yarn off of her plate, hehe! The wool for her yarns is mindfully sourced from farms that are cruelty-free. Also, did we mention her mini skein sets are called Squidlet Sets? How squidin' cute is that!?
|
Apple Fiber Studio
As delicious as the name Apple Fiber Studio would suggest, founder Andrea Evans struck gold(en delicious!) with her super-saturated colors! Inspired by the Pacific Northwest, she makes yarn that would brighten even the darkest, dreariest days! Seriously, no one can be sad with a sunshine-y shade warming their needles!
