| Scholarships, Bouquets, and Harry Potter! Last Day To Order Bouquets For Valentine's Day! | | |
Back in November, we teased that a certain scholarship program would be relaunching in 2020. Well, we just checked our calendars, and it looks like it's finally time! The fiber arts community is such a loving and welcoming community and we want to give back. Drumroll, please... Beans for Brains is back, baby!!
|
Beans for Brains is a merit-based scholarship program for artistic students pursuing or already in the process of attending post-secondary education. This program focuses on the standard things like GPA, extracurricular activities, and financial need with the added twist of being specifically for those of you with a passion for yarn knowledge!
This year, we're opening up the program to include SIX scholarships - based on four regions of the United States, one local Reno student, and one community service award.
|
|
Each scholarship covers $2,500.00 and has helped students in the past go through schoolings such as our local University of Nevada, Reno, Yale University, and Harvard University, just to name a few!
If you or someone you know would be interested in applying for the Beans for Brains Scholarship Program, please send them our way! Information regarding this program can be found on our official 2020 Beans for Brains page! Be sure to keep your eyes peeled, as applications will be available on March 2nd! To celebrate Beans for Brains returning, Jewell Christine of Our Maker Life is going live on Instagram on February 8th at 10AM PST, come join us for details about the scholarship and just chat through their Instagram page as well as the Jimmy Beans account!
Thank you so, so, SO much to our sponsors, Vogue Knitting, STITCHES, Shibui Knits, Madelinetosh, and Knitters Pride for making this dream a reality! We can't wait to unveil more in the coming months!

We've only got a week before Valentine's Day is officially here, have you gotten that special someone in your life a gift yet? Our fiber florists here at Jimmy Beans have the perfect gift idea for you or your favorite maker - a yarn bouquet!! Just as thoughtful as a normal bouquet of flowers, but with the added benefit of no wilting AND an included project to use all of that yummy yarn!
We created 5 bouquets just jumping at the chance to be on your needles and hooks this holiday:
|
|
- Crochet pattern designed by Ann Wicker
- Knit pattern designed by yellowcosmo
- Six hanks of Kate Davies' Ard-Thir
- One bag of organic Jimmy Beans Wool coffee
- One gourmet sugar cookie coated in milk chocolate
- Please note: This bouquet does NOT come with the needles or crochet hook you need to complete your project and will require a US size 6 and 7 16" and 24" for the knit pattern or a US size 7 hook for the crochet pattern.
|
Alert! This is the last day you will be able to order a bouquet and still be able to receive it before Valentine's Day!
Looking for more ways to surprise that special someone this month and show 'em just how much you love them? Go check out our Last Minute Valentine's Day Gift Guide over on our blog for needles, notions, and kit ideas. Are YOU the knitter or crocheter that wants to be a little spoiled this year? Forward this on over to whoever spoils you as your way of telling them that a lil somethin' from Jimmy Beans is just what the (Love) Doctor ordered!

Strike a Pose!
Now Vogue!
|
So there we were, just sitting there and flipping through pages of the newest edition of Vogue Knitting as every pattern caught our eye - we dog-eared some of the pages to go back to later when we were through. Sighing happily upon finishing up reading the final page, we vowed to go back and choose a project to start. The only problem? We folded the corner of every. Single. Page! We couldn't choose just one!
Our Bean, Amy, was featured in this issue of Vogue Knitting with the gorgeously graphic Scalene Poncho using Koigu Chelsea yarn! This kit includes all of the yarn you need to create this poncho. This project is perfect for those of you who like the challenge intarsia brings in a palette of blue, gold, speckles, and solids!
|
|
Of course, we fell in LOVE with the design on the cover by Georgia Farrell. She made the breathtaking Klein Reversible Wrap with the fuzzy strings of Rowan Cocoon - a scrumptious blend of wool and mohair that we would love to, well, cocoon ourselves in!

Yer a Knitter, Harry!
Do you know what one of the best feelings in the world is? When you're knitting around your family, friends, or just out in public and not everyone is familiar with how knitting works. Sure, you can't exactly gush to them about how perfect your gauge was or how long it took you to save up for that special yarn, but it's all worth it when you notice the wild stares of awe and confusion on their faces as you make a garment out of... well, a string! "Wow, you're like a wizard!" they would exclaim! And to that we say,
|
|
"Well, you aren't wrong!" with a wink! Master your skills in the wool-d of witchcraft and wizardry with the new Harry Potter: Knitting Magic pattern book by Tanis Gray! Each page is filled with the magic of our craft in the ways of knitted sweaters, house scarves, hats, and socks! There are also little fun facts scattered throughout the pages with secrets about the wardrobe of the films!
The patterns all directly relate to events or objects in the books and films! Sneak around with one of our faves - a cowl inspired by the gothic-style Mirror of Erised! This project uses Cascade Luminosa yarn and has a beautiful cabled pattern throughout. And remember: it's LuminOsa, not LuminoSA, hehe!

Who Are You Callin' Tiny?
It's only fitting that we start out the month of love by showing OUR love for Love Fest Fibers! Whew! That was a lot of love to get out there! You may remember the big splash Tough Love made, but what if we told you that yarn had a smaller sister yarn containing the same beautiful quality and structural integrity?! After all, they do say good things come in small packages!
|
Despite its name, Love Fest Fibers Tough Love Tiny packs a jumbo punch! Made out of 100% recycled New Zealand wool and hand-felted by women in Kathmandu, Nepal, this yarn has a strong resilience to it, making it ideal for any sort of project like rugs, pet beds, and baskets! The big personality of this yarn can be wrangled by US size 50 knitting needles, a size U crochet hook, or just your arms if you're feeling particularly daring!

Project On Our Needles!
Hinchinbrook Poncho
It's no secret that we love ponchos around here. They're like, the ultimate project - big enough to satisfy our need for knitting, but not as much of a commitment as say, a sweater. The airy nature of ponchos is always just to dye for because we can pair them with anything! Rowan showed us this project and we. Were. Stunned! Featuring big, classic cables as the icing on an already huge, luscious cake, you could say we were hooked!
Designed by Martin Storey, this project is available as a kit on our site!
