Reno, Nev. (May 25, 2012) - Owner of local yarn and fabric retailer Jimmy Beans Wool, Laura Zander, has authored her first book, Knit Red. To celebrate, Zander will be hosting a book signing at her store located at 1312 Capital Blvd. #103 on Tuesday June 5th from 6 - 8 pm. Joining Zander at the book signing will be local knitwear designers, Jeanne Giles, , and Diane Soucy, and from the Bay Area, designer Ann Norling. All four of these designers have contributed to this stylish appeal to women to take care of their heart health.
Knit Red (Sixth & Spring Books, June 2012, 144pp, hardcover, ISBN 978-1-936096-42-8) is the first of its kind in the knitting industry to mix style and soul with essential heart health education for women and draw awareness to the #1 killer of women in the United States, heart disease. It features 30 eye-catching, heart health-inspired red garment and accessory patterns from celebrity designers including Deborah Norville, Jared Flood, Norah Gaughan, Debbie Bliss, Kim Hargreaves, Nicky Epstein and more who also share their personal experiences with heart disease and tips on how they stay heart healthy. A section of the book is dedicated to heart-healthy living with information, tips, resources and recipes supplied by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office on Women's Health, National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and NHLBI's campaign--The Heart Truth®. A bonus pattern for a knit version of The Heart Truth's Red Dress logo, the "Mini Red Dress," is also included.
"Heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States and the Needlearts industry is made up of 98% women, so we need to draw attention to this deadly illness and help make the fiber community and women everywhere aware of their risks and informed on how to lead healthier lives," said Laura Zander. "What better way to do this than with a gorgeous, informative book that women can enjoy and reference for years to come."
Knit Red is one of many unique Stitch Red products created by numerous manufacturers and designers in the Needlearts industry to raise awareness of heart disease in women. The book will retail for $19.95 and a portion of its proceeds will benefit the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health in support of The Heart Truth®, a national awareness campaign for women about heart disease, sponsored by the NHLBI.
Copies of Knit Red, as well as the yarns used to create the patterns in the book, will be available for purchase during the book signing. Books are also now available at Jimmy Beans Wool's retail location and online at www.JimmyBeansWool.com.
