Please meet the handy new tool that's bound to be a maker's best friend, Jimmy's Sketchbook .
"Jimmy's Sketchbook is an amazing tool that gives virtual shoppers the ability to pick and choose different colors and bases for any project. It's incredibly helpful for our customers who can't come in store to look at colors and figure out what looks best together in person," said Laura Zander, co-founder of Jimmy Beans Wool. "We wanted to create this because something like Jimmy's Sketchbook doesn't exist in the fiber industry."
Customers will now see a button that reads 'add to sketchbook' next to the 'add to cart' button on all yarn products. Once the yarn is added to their personal sketchbook, users can play around with dragging and dropping yarn to different spots on the clean grid layout to see which hues pair well together.
"Did you know Mr. Bean even drew the small pencil emojis (associated with Sketchbook) from scratch?!" Laura said.
Doug is the original creator of the Jimmy Beans Wool website and has spent the last two decades refining the site by coding new features like Jimmy's Sketchbook and the Knitting Calculator .
"Our hope is that Jimmy's Sketchbook will be the go-to tool anytime a knitter, crocheter, or weaver is starting a new project," Laura added.
Jimmy's Sketchbook is available to all users regardless of whether they have an account with Jimmy Beans Wool. The features users can get right off the bat are:
- Once the sketch is up to snuff, all of those products can be added straight to the cart for easy shopping.
- Want to check how the yarn truly contrasts? Switch everything to grayscale to see if the undertones actually pair well with each other for fades or colorwork projects.
But for the folks who do have an account, there are some extra features unlocked exclusively for account holders:
- Save multiple sketchbooks to the user's account.
- Share a sketchbook with a friend. The recipient can then manipulate the sketchbook without it changing the version saved in the original user's account.
- Products can be duplicated or removed within the sketchbook with ease.
- Clicking on a yarn's name to the left of the sketchbook will reveal key product details including weight, yardage and price information.

About Jimmy Beans Wool: In 2002, former Silicon Valley engineers Laura and Doug Zander opened up a tiny yarn shop in Truckee, California. Jimmy, as Laura is lovingly known, sold coffee alongside the wool (hence beans in the name), and Jimmy Beans Wool was born! In 2004, the company settled down in Reno, Nevada. Jimmy Beans Wool is known for its lightning fast shipping, award winning customer service, and innovative Just at Jimmy's products. The company owns the brands Madelinetosh, a hand-dyed yarn company, and della Q, a line of cases and bags made for makers. The company continues to develop products under its patent-pending Jimmy's SmartStix,. Additionally, Jimmy Beans produces its very own truly local yarn, Reno Rafter 7.
