The good folks from the Christmas at Sea project asked us to help them spread the word about their wonderful - and 120 year old - charitable knitting program. We were happy to oblige! Please read on for more info...
Since 1898 (yes, EIGHTEEN ninety-eight), Christmas at Sea has provided commercial mariners with handknit hats, scarves, vests, and socks each winter as our way of saying "thank you" for making our lives more comfortable. Indeed, international seafarers and inland river mariners deliver the goods that make our own holiday gift-giving celebrations possible. Over 4,000 knitters from around the country contribute their time and talent to make over 19,000 (!) hand-knits each year!
Why do we knit? Seafarers and inland river mariners who work on the world's oceans and on the American inland river system sometimes go unnoticed, but their efforts make a big difference in our world. Learn more here.
Join us! Knit a hat, scarf, vest or socks, and join the thousands of other knitters warming hearts of mariners at Christmastime. Visit us on Facebook
or the Christmas at Sea Blog.
The Seamen's Church Institute has offered up 5 free suggested patterns for us and we've paired them with yarn recommendations, keeping in mind the environment the mariners are working in. We hope you'll join us and cast on for a cause. When your garment is complete, mail them to Christmas at Sea, The Seamen's Church Institute, 118 Export Street, Port Newark, NJ 07114. Please include your name and address within the package so we can acknowledge its receipt. Also, SCI encourages knitters to include a personal note or photograph!
To sweeten the pot, if you knit a hat with yarn purchased from Jimmy Beans Wool and submit it to the Christmas at Sea program, we'll reimburse you with account credit for 20% of the costs! Simply take a photo of your garment & your JBW receipt and contact our customer service team, we'll handle the rest!
So join us in our support of the Christmas at Sea initiative, and keep a mariner warm during the holidays this year!
