Lace weight is the lightest weight of yarn there is! This ultra-thin yarn is used for delicate or lace pieces, and typically calls for US size 00-2 needles, a 0.50mm-1.75mm size hook, and gets an average of 33 stitches (or more) per inch. Fingering weight yarn is also known as “super fine” or “sock” yarn. It’s great for (you guessed it!) making socks, and other light-weight clothing. This yarn calls for US size 0-3 needles, a A-C (2mm-3.25mm) size hook, and gets an average of 27-32 stitches per 4 inches. Also known as “fine yarn”, sport weight yarn is slightly heavier than fingering and lace weight yarn, and is a good option for lightweight sweaters, accessories, and baby clothes. DK or “double-knitting” weight is a little heavier than sport or sock yarn, but doesn’t have the bulk that worsted weight has - hence its other name “light worsted-weight yarn”. It’s a great option for a variety of projects such as sweaters, hats, baby clothes and more. This yarn calls for US size 5-7 needles, a 4mm-5mm size hook, and gets an average of 21-24 stitches per 4 inches. The Workhorse Weight! Also referred to as “aran weight”, worsted weight is perhaps the most popular due to its versatility. This yarn calls for US size 7-9 needles, a 5.5mm-6.5mm size hook, and gets an average of 19-20 stitches per 4 inches.
