How to Crochet a Scarf with a box style Ruffle Yarn
Leanne shows us how to crochet with one type of ruffle yarn, Rozetti Tundra, which is a box style ruffle yarn. Other similar yarns are Trendsetter Cha-Cha, Plymouth Joy Prism and Plymouth Joy Rainbow, among others. She recommends using a hook sizes between G & K, or the recommended size on the yarn label. As with most ruffle yarns, hook size & gauge are not overly important, so use a hook size that works for you.
- To begin, determine how many stitches across you would like your project to be, then count that many boxes starting from the end of the yarn.
- Insert your hook into the next box and chain one (this takes two boxes). The stitch you have on your hook is essentially the start of your foundation row. To create the foundation row, match the tail row, which are the boxes you initially counted, against the yarn on the other side of the stitch on your hook. Keep the tail side facing you.
- Working with both strands yarn, insert the hook through the front of the box in the tail section (the part facing you) then yarn over with the top of the box from the working yarn section (the part away from you) and pull it through the first box and the loop on the hook, just as you would normally do to create a crochet slip stitch.
- Continue working in this manner across the number of boxes you've selected.
- When you get to the end of your "row" chain one from your working yarn end and turn.
- Now you will be working with only one strand, the working yarn end. You'll see that you have a row of regular looking stitches, to start the next row, pick up the first stitch from the hook normally and yarn over with the strand at the top of the next box and pull it through the loop on the hook, creating a crochet slip stitch.
- Work your way back across by doing a slip stitch in each stitch with the top of each box you come to.
- Continue these steps, working back-and-fourth in a 'z' motion being careful to never twist your yarn, you need to always keep it flat.
Alternatively, you could also create a round, boa like scarf by joining in the round to form a tube after you've created your foundation row. Note: this produces a very dense ruffle.
