Dye Yarn with Kool-Aid Tutorial

Have you ever wanted to dye your own yarn? This tutorial is for you! Rachel demonstrates step-by-step what you'll need in order to dye your own yarn using Kool-Aid. Natural, un-dyed yarn yields the best results.

What you'll need:

  • Natural, undyed yarn
  • 2 medium-sized bowls
  • Water
  • 1/2 Teaspoon
  • 1 packet of Kool-Aid
  • Microwave
  • Soak (optional)

Directions:

  1. Fill a medium-sized bowl with about 2 cups of water
  2. Soak your project in the bowl for about 30-45 minutes
  3. Prepare your dye(s)
  4. Remove project from bowl, and squeeze out any excess water
  5. Add 1/2 teaspoon of dye, per egg being dyed, to water & stir until dissolved
  6. Submerge project in the dye solution
  7. Microwave bowl in 5 minute increments until the water is mostly clear
  8. Remove project from the dye solution, and submerge in clean water to rinse out any excess dye (we also used Soak to rinse our sample!)
  9. Remove project from bowl, and squeeze out any excess water
  10. Dry completely & enjoy!
