How to do a Crochet Spike Stitch
Shevawn explains this super fun crochet stitch called a Spike stitch! She recommends The Happy Hooker by Debbie Stoller as a great guide which has both a photo and a graph along with simple written instructions (on page 66).
This stitch looks great with two colors to create a fun striped effect but it can be done with only one color for a textural effect.
- Using color "A", start by making a foundation chain and then working 4 rows of single crochet.
- Now using color "B" join and single crochet into the first two stitches of row 5
- In the third stitch, you'll single crochet into the 2nd row down and bring the loop up so that the top of your row will be even and straight. You want to make sure it's not so tight that it scrunches up your work nor creates a dip or undulation.
- In the fourth stitch you'll single crochet into the third row down pulling the loop up even as before.
- In the fifth stitch you'll single crochet into the 4th row down pulling the loop up even as before..
- In the sixth stitch you'll single crochet into the 3rd row down again pulling the loop up even as before.
- In the seventh stitch you'll single crochet into the 2nd row down again pulling the loop up even as before..
- Finally, in the eighth stitch you'll single crochet into the top row again just like a normal single crochet.
- Do another single crochet before beginning this process again and repeat across the row.
- Single crochet 3-4 rows after the spike row.
- Change back to color "A" staggering the spikes so that they are offset from the previously spiked row.
