Hand Dyed Yarn 102

Our very own Jeanne stars in this knitting instructional video discussing hand dyed yarn variablity. We hope you enjoy it!

Hand Dyed Yarn 102

We all love the hand-dyed yarns that we carry, including those from Madelinetosh, Lorna's Laces and Koigu. The Knitter's Guide To Hand-Dyed And Variegated Yarn by Lorna Miser is a great resource for working with hand-dyed yarns.

In this video Jeanne talks about color variability in hand dyed yarns, why this is desirable and how it can cause difficulties. She explains how to utilize extreme color differences between hanks and what we do to help you find hanks that you feel comfortable working with and will give you the effect you're looking for.

Hand dyed yarns are unique, they have an artistic feel to them and are one of a kind creations that add depth and interest to our projects.

Should you end up with two or more very different tones or dyelots of your hand dyed yarn a very simple way to moderate the color difference would be to hold the two strands together while knitting. This attenuates both colors and gives a blended look.

Another method is to alternate rows of each dyelot, this allows two equally lovely hanks to shine equally but doesn't create stripes or lines of color change.

When you order multiple hanks we work very hard to make sure that they come as close to each other in color as possible. If we feel they aren't close we will contact you, let you know and give you the choice of what to do. Please, never hesitate to contact us and have us look at the hanks we have in stock to help you in your selection.

Experiment and play with these yarns and the techniques in our videos. See what you like and don't like. The beauty of these yarns is that they are so amazingly unique and using them will turn an ordinary project into a one-of-a-kind work of art!
