Our very own Jeanne stars in this knitting instructional video demonstrating how to increase in the stitch below. We hope you enjoy it!
How to Increase in the Stitch Below (Right-handed, English):
Jeanne explains this knitting technique which is useful when you want to do an invisible increase without making holes in your work. It is sometimes called a Lifted Increase. This increase would be great for top-down sweaters, side shaping, bust darts, knitted Amigurumi or anywhere you might need to increase stitches invisibly! Here's how to achieve it:
- Look at the next stitch on your left-hand needle and find the top loop of the stitch below it.
- Insert the tip of your right-hand needle into that top loop from front to back. If you find this difficult try picking up the stitch from the back, hold it with your left thumb and forefinger. Then, remove your needle and reinsert it into the loop from front to back as Jeanne is doing in the video.
- Knit into the stitch then knit into the stitch on the needle. You've just increased one stitch!
Helpful Tips:
If you find it difficult to find or pick-up that top loop of the stitch below, you can also work this technique by lifting the right-hand leg of the stitch below with your right-hand needle inserted front to back. Just make sure that you don't catch the bar between the stitches that are currently on the needles. Alternatively, you can also lift the stitch below from back to front and temporarily slip it onto your left needle. Then just knit it normally and knit the next stitch.
