Kristen and Jeanne star in this knitting instructional video demonstrating how to do gauge and pattern modifications. We hope you enjoy it!
Be a Fearless Knitter!
Be adventuresome with your knitting! See a pattern that you like the idea of but want to change one aspect of it? Kristen & Jeanne discuss some of the possibilities. Below are some of the great tips they offer for how you can modify your patterns!
- You can use any pattern as a template and make modifications to length, design or more to suit your own personal needs and style.
- You can add a diagonal stitch, cables, lace patterns, seed stitch borders, etc.... to any basic stockinette stitch pattern for added interest. Just be sure to count your stitches and do your math in advance so that the stitch counts match.
- Try adding stripes of color to a simple pattern for added style.
- You can even use a different yarn weight than the pattern calls for by swatching and checking your gauge. Adjust your gauge to match the pattern by going up or down in needle size. Alternatively, you can swatch and find your gauge then do the math to recalculate your pattern to make sure the finished size will be right for you.
- Top down knitting is great for adjusting patterns because you can try on the garment as you go. Simply slip all your stitches onto a waste yarn to try on then slip them back onto the needle to continue knitting.
There is never a wasted stitch, you always learn something, even when thing don't work out as planned.
So go for it in your next project, try something new!
