Why Story-Rich Yarn Keeps Us Making

There are some people in this industry who are so foundational that you don’t remember meeting them. They’ve just always been there.

That’s how I feel about Kit and John from Churchmouse.

I don’t remember when I first met them. I just remember always being in awe. Over time, especially in the last five years, that awe turned into real friendship. I’ve spent time with them at their home on Bainbridge. We’ve shared meals, conversations, ideas. We’re firmly part of the same mutual admiration society.

And when I knit one of their patterns, all of that history comes with it.

That’s what I mean when I say story-rich yarn keeps us making.

This Poncho Is a Place I Return To

This project, a Churchmouse Easy Folded Poncho knit in Yarn Citizen Harmony Worsted, is one I come back to again and again.

Not because it’s complicated. Not because it’s challenging.

But because there are moments when I’m overwhelmed, stretched thin, or just emotionally tired, and I don’t have the capacity for anything more than stockinette in a rectangle.

And somehow, Kit has this gift.

She takes the simplest possible construction, literally a rectangle, and elevates it into something that feels beautiful, intentional, and quietly luxurious. No tricks. No drama. Just proportion, fabric, and trust.

This is the pattern I reach for:

  • when I’m stressed
  • when I want my hands busy but my brain quiet
  • when I have a yarn that means something to me and I just want to knit with it

That’s not accidental. That’s design wisdom earned over decades.

Why Yarn Citizen Was the Right Match

I chose Yarn Citizen for this poncho very intentionally.

Yarn Citizen’s story has always resonated with me because it starts with a simple, values-driven question:

Why are we wasting good fiber?

The brand was built around rescuing high-quality wool and alpaca that would otherwise be discarded, giving it a second life as yarn that’s earth-conscious, consistent, and accessible. Not precious. Not performative. Just thoughtfully made and meant to be used.

That matters. Because when yarn feels too precious, you hesitate. When it feels accessible and meaningful, you knit.

Yarn Citizen lets you stay present with your project instead of worrying about whether you’re “doing it right.”

When Story Changes How You Knit

Here’s something I’ve noticed over and over again: When a project carries story, real story, not marketing copy, you knit differently.

You’re more patient. You’re more attentive. You don’t rush to finish.

I cherished every single stitch of this poncho because:

  • the pattern comes from people I deeply admire
  • the yarn represents values I believe in
  • the simplicity gave me space to just be

That combination is powerful.

This Isn’t About Complexity

This isn’t about challenging yourself. It’s not about learning a new technique. It’s not about knitting something impressive. It’s about choosing projects that meet you where you are.

Sometimes that means:

  • stockinette
  • a familiar shape
  • a yarn you trust
  • a pattern you’ve knit before

And sometimes, that’s exactly what keeps you making.

If You’ve Been Struggling to Pick Up Your Knitting

Try this:

Don’t ask, “What should I make next?”

Ask, “What do I need this project to give me?”

Comfort? Focus? Connection? A place to rest?

Then choose:

  • a yarn with meaning
  • a pattern that doesn’t fight you

That’s how knitting becomes more than output. That’s how it becomes grounding.

This poncho does that for me. Over and over again.
